Hi,
I bought a 4gb live usb off amazon and nothing is staying (settings, passwords, backgrounds etc...) and there is 2.8GB left?
Can anyone help?

Not sure if I understand your question. You bought a live USB (flash drive I assume). It is a live flash drive of some distro of Ubuntu (again assuming). Nothing is staying? (Any changes that you make to the OS do not remain upon reboot). If all of those assumptions are correct, it is probably because there was not a persistent file set up when the flash drive was created. It can used to boot and install the OS on a computer but without persistent files you will not be able to make changes to it.

Thanks,
do you know of any way to make one?

Yes, you can make persistent file during the creation of a start-up disk. I don't understand why you would want one though. Four Gbs is not very large considering the install took a little over 1 Gb. Why don't you install the OS on your computer either as a dual boot with your current OS or as the only OS on your computer. Then you can make changes to it to your hearts content.:D

Trouble is, I didn't make it and I want to have it so I can plug it in and have a familiar desktop and programs, all I really want is google chrome and the document editor.

I am going to give you a web site that may be of assistance. When I make bootable flash drives, I always accept the default which is 128 Mbs. It appears that this can be increased. I cannot vouch for this method but perhaps someone else on the forum has used it and can chime in.

I tried but now I'm getting a 'boot error' message when I try to boot it.
It is a DVDxDVD http://dvdxdvd.com/Ubuntu-11.04-on-4gb-USB-Stick/M/B00487TWB4.htm

Sounds like it has the Ubuntu DVD images on it, not a persistent installation. . .
