^^^^^^ any idea how to make this my screen saver ? i tried installing in wine, couldn't get much further then that.....the download is towards the bottom, its cool cause it doubles as a small system monitoring screen saver tied into matrix theme ,

Screensavers are dumb. In today's age monitor burn-in doesn't happen. A better option is to enable the screen to sleep after a given time from the power manager to conserve energy.

Why not do something cooler like an animated desktop background like this:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2007/09/14/animated-wallpaper-with-compiz-fusion-on-ubuntu/ Sure this is 4 years old, but it might still work, and then use conky for system monitor readouts.

Of course I'm not responsible if you break your computer.

Every single one of the Matrix screensavers for Linux BLOW CHUNCKS! I have tried them all and they all smell really bad.

The most authentic Matrix screensaver I have ever seen is this one (http://www.meticulous-software.co.uk/downloads.shtml). I read in his blog that he is thinking about porting a Linux and OS X version but, that was a while ago. I believe the source code is available if you're good at coding.

Screensavers are dumb...

I am of the opposite opinion. Computers are cool, especially ones with lots of eye candy. Screensavers are eye candy. Eye candy is cool! :cool:

It's completely possible that you've found that wine is not a panacea. Not everything for windows will work through wine.

Thread moved to Wine.

Edit - that said a quick search of the wine appdb finds that an old version of it worked with an old version of wine in an old ubuntu release.

@hookitup,

Did you look at the xscreensaver package? It's in the repos and has a Matrix-like screensaver (along with a ton of other very cool screensavers - look for the various extras!). There is a thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=195557 which explains how to replace the default gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver.

Personally, I use xscreensaver and have it set to run a random screensaver from the collection and change every 10 minutes or so. My cat is particularly fond of 'Atlantis.' ;-)
