Or something even slower than a slug...

I've got Wine all installed and steam installed but when ever I start steam it absolutely SLOWS DOWN. I can't do anything it slows my computer so damn bad. I have to do xkill in terminal to even close it.

Any help?

As much as I've tried, Steam just doesn't run very well in Linux. It's one of the only reasons I'm still keeping my Windows partition around. Hopefully they'll get it working better someday....

System specs?

My first guess with something like this is always that the system (probably a laptop) has an integrated graphics chip and an insufficient amount of memory. Just as a hypothetical, a laptop with 1-2gb of ram is then sharing its ram with the integrated graphics chip. The graphics chip is already a piece of crap in its own right (because it's a mobile version) but then it is memory-starved. Beyond this, if it is indeed a laptop, you are suffering from a severe case of Mobile Processorism, which can not be treated.

Using Linux + Wine, Steam's browser always runs like crap.. and I suppose it can sometimes take a smidge longer to "do stuff", than it would in Windows.. but the rest of my system is never affected by Steam; it's the only pig in the pen, so to speak. Granted, I have an assload of memory and an actual graphics card.

..I just looked at your previous posts to see if you mentioned your system.. and you did! However, I would guess that an iMac would also have an integrated graphics chip (? not sure about this..) so the same issue probably applies. Interested to know what ends up being the root of the problem. (I'm still gonna lean on the graphics chip + memory-thing)

Try using a lighter Distro/ Desktop environment and see if that helps?
