Ah sorry I misunderstood - well, I guess misread - your initial question. I'm pretty sure the icons change depending on which "tier" you've reached, see bluevoodoo's link.

It's just a form of cutesy ranking system. I quite like it... It's funny, and exciting to see what your rank changes to!
