Ubuntu has overtaken Mandrake on the 3 month list (i.e. hits over the last 3 months). It has topped the 1 month list for some time. Congratulations to the developers and the community!

Rock on!!
I can't believe Ubuntu is exploding as it is. I figured it would be a gradual change, but man! It's flying.

I was surprised too, at first. Now, six months after my first jump into Ubuntu, I haven't found another distro that even comes close, so it's understandable. This forum community makes it that much better.

Since I participated on this thread (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=15560&page=1&pp=10) I've been collecting data on the top 5 distros in the 6 month and 1 month rankings. I've got a bit more than two weeks of data now, with a break a few days ago from illness. ;)
In the 6-month, Ubuntu has been straight as an arrow at ~ 9.5 points added every day. (linear curve fit explains 99% of the variance in the data. Surprising!) In the 1-month however, Ubuntu's been dipping recently. Mepis is on the way to take over the short term top spot, so it's been getting more increase in interest lately.
I'm going to post some predictions based on the data I've collected next week.
More power to all of the distros. I've been enjoying the whole GNU/Linux ride. The tech. director of my campus will be bringing a spare machine in next week, and I'll guide him through an Ubuntu install for him to play with. :) Woo hoo!
Now, if I can just figure out how to add items to my applications menu.. *banging my head against that wall still, after extended weeks of forum searching and trying a multitude of different fixes and methods*

Warty or Hoary?

Warty or Hoary?
Warty. I've made launchers while sudoed, changed applications directory permissions and all sorts of things, but not managed to manually add an entry to the games or Internet submenus. They show up in Nautilus in applications://Games and so on, but don't apear on the actual menubar. Annoying to say the least.
But, I don't wanna hijack this thread with off-topic stuff. ;)
I've got some rudimentary projections going on when Ubuntu will grab the brass ring: the 6-month ranking that shows up as the default at DistroWatch. The file's at work, and I can't remember the exact date, but it was early-mid April if current trends continue. :)

Somewhere mother Debian weeps a tear in pride.
"I could never pass Mandrake, but I knew that my kids could."

Click Applications, click whichever folder you want to add a program to, and then right click and select "Entire Menu" then "Add new item to this menu".

Ehhh... can you not see her under my name?
Or are you asking where I pulled her off the net? If that's the case, I didn't pull her off the net, that's my little creation... :) Her name is Bunny. heh.
That's so awesome that you remember who first talked to you! Wow. I don't remember who first talked to me... of course that's because I have a rusty steel trap for a brain... heh.

Right, but it's because you gave ubuntu a second try that - that's part of the reason why it's #1 ...
See there panickedthumb...? Using your tactics to bring us right back 'round to the topic. ;)

I have an idea. When Ubuntu hits number 1 in the six month scale (known as the default), lets throw a web party. Send out webinvatations.

Not a bad idea poof!
It'd have to be an all-day party though, since so many people work or go to school. That way everyone could join in the fun.

Thanks for the help, adbak. But as I said, I've tried for just under a month now and exhausted every method available on this forum. That's what I tried the first time. No dice. ;)
The wonderful kassetra helped me out last night though. After a delightful romp through a lib-deficient, broken Gnome and fixing it up, still nothing. However, I'm not the only one, so I take some comfort in that. And I'm sure the menu will work in Hoary.

Ooooo. I like that. Where should I post the predicted date of the festivities? I've got a few weeks of data that are begging for analysis. :)

start a new thread just for that purpose. A smart mod will sticky it (hint, hint).

I have a question though... Is DistroWatch *really* relevant? I mean, it's just hits, isn't it? If I go there, I often will check out a few distros, not just the one I use and actually usually not the one I use since, well, I use it and therefore I know the info about it.
What we need is something like the Linux Counter where all Linux users can register and state what distro they use. The difference being that it would actually list all the distros, not just the major players. I'd like it to count if I type in "Ubuntu."

I got the hint. Was just out with my wife having dinner and cruising through Borders. The take: the latest k.d. lang album (yummy), "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" by Eric S. Raymond (mmmmm. Open Source and philosophy in one book. I love it!), the latest issue of Bass Player magazine, and a punk rock vegan cookbook (if that sounds odd or somehow contradictory, you don't know as much about punk as you think. ).
I've got the file with my data and the ongoing analysis at work. I'll start a thread on Monday.. once I have all my grading turned in. (i.e. maybe Tuesday. heehee)
