Ubuntu Server 10.10 Maverick.

I have my server running samba to share media with my HTPC (running XBMC on Win7). Everything's been working fine until a few weeks ago. I could watch 1080p content with no buffering occuring, but now buffering is unavoidable, even on 720p content. It seems a complete server restart will fix the problem temporarily, leading me to think it's not related to the router or HTPC. A service restart of smbd does not help. What could cause the network to gradually slow down like this?
