Can only hear sounds with earphones

I have to use earphones to listen to sounds like music or videos or stuff like that with my Ubuntu. I've no problem with hearing sounds in the normal way on the Windows side. I have had this same stupid issue with Ubuntu from 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 and my current 10.10. I can only hear sounds through the earphones. I'd like to get something to fix this now!!

First of all give us your machine details. Or paste here result of ls-pci command.

Just had this problem with my little brother...have you tried
sound preferences -> Output
and look down to "connector" If there is anything like Analog Headphones selected right now try to change it to Analog Output or something like that.

Sorry for the noob approach...but always try to get the easy stuff out of the way before you cut to the terminal :P
