Hi, I'm looking to buy a new laptop soon and I want to make sure I buy one that is compatible with Ubuntu. I'm particularly concerned about the video card driver working properly. The laptop will be used primarily for games, and I'm wondering if there was a decent graphics card, capable of running something like Starcraft 2 or Battlefield Bad Company 2 with highish settings, that works well with Ubuntu. I have experienced only pain with my current setup (3 year old desktop, Radeon x1950) when trying to get games working on Ubuntu.

Have you seen the laptop compatability list (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1543006) thread?

Also, Linux isn't really the best choice for a gaming laptop...

EDIT: If you like HP, these (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_can.do;HHOJSID=7PsfTnGPsrTXcs89Z8425BZ4sPFj JDvnpn0W1VyTKNtW6yhy2Wgy!-1684593514?storeName=computer_store&landing=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance) are the laptops I'd look at.

EDIT EDIT: Forget about HP, Alienware (http://www.alienware.com/) laptops are made specifically for gaming.

The Alienware laptops may have Optimus, if that is the case it wouldn't work for Linux. Watch out for Optimus if the laptop has an Nvidia card, some Optimus laptops are fine if there is a BIOS option to disable it (like the Thinkpad 410)

have a look at this: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/

also there are some HPs with ATi cards that come with OpenSUSE preinstalled.
