How to re-enable hardware accelaration?

I was trying to make the graphics on a game look better, and I was hoping updating the video driver would work so I followed the instructions on http://ubuntuguide.net/install-nvidia-graphical-driver-in-ubuntu-lucid-10-04 but that just ruined everything. Now everything that requires hardware acceleration doesnt work.

Im using a Gateway desktop with an intel 82865G video card
