After many video issues I decided to upgrade to Natty. This resolved all the "normal" video issues, but movie playback suffers from a rather unique quirk: video is only visible when you lay another window over it. And then only the area of the window laid over shows video. To put it differently: the area of the active, laid over window is replaced with a cutout of the video that should be shown in the window below. The rest of what should be video output stays black.

Using the Catalyst driver, triple screen setup.

Another interesting thing to note is that the problem does not appear in VLC with accelerated video turned off. But video playback is slower than on non-accelerated video on Lucid, even at pretty low resolutions.
