I have a laptop with ATI Radeon Mobility graphics. In GNOME, any video overlay stays on top an cannot be occluded by any other window. Everything works as normal in XFCE. What's wrong?

*bump* I can't be the only person who has noticed this. Works this way back to 10.04. Video overlays are unsinkable, including Xscreensaver: to get back to my desktop I have to blind-type my password, and any movie file takes absolute control over the desktop. Laptop, ATI mobility graphics, please assist. I don't want to go back to XFCE.
