Sorry for creating this new thread. I am a new member and I just wanted to express how in love I am with Ubuntu:D

I tried Ubuntu out because of sheer frustration with Windows and now I ended up deleting Windows completely and only run Ubuntu Natty on my Lenovo T60 and it works AMAZINGLY! I am new to Linux and I will never go back, I'm a convert!:)

I use Windows in a VBox now for 1 application (goto meeting) and thats exactly where the thing belongs. So easy to delete it if I need to. Never again will I be a slave to Microsoft!!! Just a pity you can't buy a new laptop without Windows:(

Thank you Ubuntu! You have given me FREEDOM!

Wow you guys are all amazing!!! Thank you Wolfen69 for the info! I checked out those websites and they do indeed sell laptops with Ubuntu!:D Its such a pity tho that America seems to be the only forward thinking nation on earth:( I live in South Africa and to find a laptop here without Windows is like asking for Hitler to be a nice guy. Whats up with this world?

In all fairness though, there is a company called Incredible Connection which did start selling a few laptops with Linux distros (at the time I was scared of Linux...such a ignorant fool) but I see that they don't sell it any more and when I approached the sales guy about it, he said that for every 10 Linux laptops they sold, 9 would come back because people didn't know how to use it or down the line they would realize some of their beloved Windows software wouldn't work on it.

I knew right from the start that not all software would work on it and that was the challenge getting it to work:D So far I have not had a single hiccup. It deeply saddens me to see how some people on this forum are quick to dismiss Ubuntu or Linux in general as been a bad OS!! Haven't they heard of Google if they have a problem?
Anyway, I am a fan in a big way and I am here to stay! Thank you guys for all the hard work and time you put into this OS, it feels like I have come home and my computer is fun to use again:D

Unfortunately I still have Win7 on my gaming desktop at home so my next project will be to try and convert that to Ubuntu and see what I can do with Wine:D

Thank you guys for everything and for being so nice and friendly!!

Cheers

Welcome! :)
Just a word of caution: Don't remove Windows from your gaming rig just yet; there are still quite a few games that don't work well in Wine.

NanoSurfer,

Welcome aboard!

This should be useful when you try gaming through Wine: http://www.playonlinux.com/en .

Hope that helps.

Hey jmszr

Thanks for the info! Yeah I had come across that site during my earlier exploits into the world of Linux and I wasn't a 100% sure at the time what playonlinux was exactly, I didn't spend a lot of time there previously but I had a good look at it last night :D Thank you!!

Thanks for the tip Arthur_D:D It's such a shame that I can't fully remove Windows on my gaming rig:( I knew that would be the case though, sucks!!!
By the way, just out a curiosity, anyone by any chance know if Linux works ok on the Republic Of Gamers Rampage 2 Extreme motherboard with a GTS8800 Alpha Dog Nvidea Graphics Card??? I know this belongs in a different thread but thought I would throw it out there. Reason I am asking is that in the VBox it says my graphics are not good enough so cant play unity:confused: I also have 6gigs of Ram so thats horse manure if ya ask me. Could be a VBox thing I guess.

Thanks again guys!!!!

Yes that's most likely a "VBox thing". ;)
Try a real install or at least a Live CD, and see how it goes - NVIDIA is actually the safest bet for gaming with Wine, or so I've heard.

If you have low expectations to Wine, you will get amazed. If you have high expectations to Wine, you will be disappointed. -- 2 seconds old proverb that I just made up. ;)

There's nothing wrong with having a dual-boot machine. Sometimes I want to do something that I can only do in Windows - like play a specific game, or test my website in IE. :P

Have your machine serve you and your needs. A dual-boot is a perfectly acceptable approach.

Hey Arthur_D

Thanks for the advice and input! Much appreciated mate:D I'm certainly gonna try it and see how it works. I am actually waiting for our ADSL line to come through at home (Just moved to a new place) so the minute I'm cruizing the net again, I will give it a bash (I have the Live CD but need the updates)

So awesome having the support you guys give! Wish MS was this community driven!

Cheers mate

Hey Freebeer

Yeah I totally agree, in fact thats exactly what I think I will do:D

Out of interest sake, what about having Windows7 inside the VBox? My work laptop is running only Ubuntu and I have installed xp in a VBox and it seems to be running perfectly. So my question I guess is, will Win7 handle (or detect) my system properly from inside the VBox for my gaming rig? I think there will be some issues as there is already an issue with Ubuntu detecting my system properly running inside the VBox so I guess it will have to be a dual boot scenario. I don't want to remove Windows to only find out that it does not work properly then have to reinstall everything again:( *Sigh*

Thanks for the reply and info mate! Much appreciated:D

If it's for gaming, don't think about using virtualization. I know virtualization software is starting to get some 3D support, but I believe it still doesn't work acceptably in most gaming situations. Do a dual-boot as suggested, and see what you can get working in Wine - using Winetricks you can get many games installed, but that doesn't mean they run good enough. E.g. I installed Burnout Paradise in Wine with Winetricks to check if it could run, and even though it doesn't crash after entering the game as it did before, there's major texture corruption in many areas, so much that it's basically unplayable. So yeah, keep a Windows install around. :)

(That being said, Halo Custom Edition works well in Wine, so you might be lucky if you only play games that already works well.)

I have little direct experience with VBox or any other virtualization setup, so I can't really comment. I think Arthur_D has it right - it can be problematic with 3D games in some instances. But that's what I've heard through my various reading - no direct experience. The one game I keep the Windows around for won't work in a Virtual machine (by design) so I've always stuck to the dual-boot route. It has always served me well.

When you think about it, it a dual-boot also makes diagnosing issues easier - you don't have to worry if the error is in the virtualization layer. :P

Best of luck in whatever you choose to do. I should also point out that with virtualization you can still dual boot, then run a virtual instance inside the OS if you want to get really geeky. :P

Hey Rasa!

Yeah dude I totally agree with you mate:D If it wasn't for this gaming issue though I would have thrown MS right in the trash or preferably used the disks as cool coffee coasters:D I will never willingly use MS ever again in my life! In fact it irritates me turning my gaming rig on and seen that stupid bloated rip off logo glaring at me and knowing that I have to sacrifice a slice of my HD to accommodate the stupid thing . If i didn't enjoy games so much it would be history! *sigh*

Thanks for the welcome dude! You guys ROCK!!

Hey Arthur

Wow man thanks for all your help and for been so patient! I know I asked some questions which should have gone on another thread so thank you for answering and not getting irritated;) Also, I really appreciate your wisdom!

You guys are the reason that this beautiful software is so special! People like you give the name "Ubuntu", so much meaning:D

Hey Freebeer

Thank you man for your wisdom and good insight:D I will do the dual boot route (*sigh*) Only cause I have to though (damn software manufactures;)) It sickens me though knowing that I have to have MS hijacking a slice of my HD (I'm sure you have guessed by now that I hate MS;) I had some terrible experiences in the past!!)

Take care man and thank you again for your help and wisdom!

Best regards
