Hi,

relatively light Ubuntu user here. Installing Ubuntu on my mom's laptop. Installation went smoothly, but I don't have any internet. There seems to be no driver installed for the wireless, I tried to plug the computer into my modem, but it doesn't connect to the internet, won't even find the router. I copy paste some commands from the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

short version: I got wireless internet on the laptop working but I think wired still doesn't work.

I ran the system from LiveCD, and the wireless worked! Specifically, at first nothing worked (neither wireless nor wired), then I loaded up Hardware Drivers, and it showed me two Broadcom drivers that were available. I tried activating the first one, it failed. I tried activating the second one, it told me a restart would be needed. I waited a little bit, and the second driver seemed to activate by itself. After that, I was able to see wireless networks. I typed in my network password and was able to connect and use the Internet.

I reinstalled 10.04 with an ethernet cable connected. No connections availble. Since on LiveCD activating Broadcom seemed to help, I tried to look for Hardware Drivers. It says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." I then followed the instructions in:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx

and installed both the STA and the B43 drivers, using a USB stick to copy the B43 firmware over. The instructions indicate that at the end the user should go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and activate the new drivers. However, when I did that, the system still told me no new drivers were available. On the other hand, wireless networks were now showing up under the internet connections toolbar (the radio lines on the top right). I selected my network, typed in the password, and was able to access the internet.

However, it seems that the wired connection is still not working, which is a little troubling. The driver for it seems to be installed (see my original message) but it's not able to connect to the internet. I did a quick google search but wasn't able to find anything. If anyone has sage advice, would be much appreciated!

Hi,

I updated and upgraded with those commands, everything seemed to go fine. Checked that wired connection still not working after update + upgrade:

-disconnected wireless
-plugged in ethernet cable
-clicked on "auto eth0" under wired networks
-after a wait, there was a red exclam over the radio icon and a message saying the wired connection was disconnected (offline).

with the ethernet cable plugged in:

PS I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I checked the system kernel log, and it has messages like this:

[ 13.441746] sky2 eth0: enabling interface
[ 13.441851] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

I assume you have tried to reboot with the ethernet cable attached and that we are sure the cable is a good one. I thought maybe you needed firmware installed but everywhere I looked the sky2 driver looks just like yours. We could look at the dmesg in more depth, but I see nothing wrong.

Try the following line copy and paste in terminal.

dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|sky2|ssb|nd iswrapper'
