Hello,
I've bought a new laptop (Toshiba Satellite) preinstalled with Win7. I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu or Mint. I've read http://eyeonlinux.com/2010/11/02/unity-ubuntus-descent-into-madness
Now I have questions:
Why can't I just install Ubuntu 11.04 and remove Unity and install Gnome?
Is Ubuntu 11.04 minus Unity plus Gnome equal to, less than, or greater than Linux Mint 11?

If you want to put gnome3 on you can but yes it removes unity I believe because the are not compatible, but a lot of people have tried and it worked horribly. So it is up to you, but remember gnoime3 is still buggy and natty has a few issues so you mix the two you might be asking for trouble.

Thanks for letting me know that Gnome 2.X is part of Ubuntu 11.04.
What would you say are the major differences then between Ubuntu 11.04 running Gnome 2.x and Linux Mint 11?

I had installed mint 11 in virtualbox but I have not had the time to use it. In the next release of oneiric, gnome3 is suppose to be in the repositories and gnome2 is gone for good.

in linux mint you got all the media codes and flash preinstalled with mint tools . You dont get thost in ubuntu by default .

Gnome 3 will never be in the repos. It will have its own PPA if someone wishes to use it.

Are you talking about Gnome shell instead of Gnome 3?
From my understanding both Unity and Gnome Shell are just shells on top of gnome. Currently Gnome Shell sits on top of Gnome 3 and Unity Gnome2, but by 11.10 Unity would be a shell for gnome 3 as well and gnome 2 would be dropped.

mint 11 uses a modified gnome version which strikes me as user friendly as i'm still not in for kde4 nor unity. but that's just personal of course.
you could try the live cd's to see what you like best.

I flip flop on OS distros (within Debian/Ubuntu) so here's my penny for a thought:
Linux Mint is nice cause all the packages for codecs, flash, java, etc. are preinstalled. It uses a Gnome 2 classic environment (for 11 and below) with the menu replaced with GnoMenu.
I have not heard if 12 will use Gnome 3 and it's failback (failsafe?) environment or if they will use shell (I assume failback (failsafe?) mode).
The only thing I don't like about Mint (which I fix very easily), is the CSE on google searches (Custom Search Experience (IIRC)). What that does is it puts their logo (huge) and it uses Google for the search. Trouble is I have to scroll down just to see the first result when in regular google I see the first 3-5 regularly. (Without CSE) And sometimes it seems the searches are different.
That's my only disappointment with LM other than that I love it like Ubuntu =D.

I think you're wrong. When installing Ubuntu, you can tick the "Download third-party software", which will download codes to play .wav,.mp3 etc. (Note: I am using Ubuntu 11.04)

I would be suggesting the same, but I would only try fedora for Gnome 3, installed it like a week ago and couldn't stay a day with it, in my opinnion Ubuntu is way better than Fedora. If Fedora had stopped rushing their releases so much maybe it would have been better. ;)

i second that, tried fedora and gnome shell definitley was not for me, but its for some people i suppose, just that ubuntu is way better and im actually coming to like unity now, thats a big change from the early 11.04 alphas, i was considering finding a new distro

If you want 11.04 without Unity i'd suggest Ubuntu 10.10. I've been using 11.04 with classic for the last month and have regretted upgrading ever since. Maverick (in my experience anyway) is far more stable than Natty in classic mode.
Also thinking of trying Linux Mint, Xubuntu or Kubuntu as i'm not impressed by Unity so far. Looks good as a netbook/small laptop DE, but doesn't sit right on a 17" 1920x1200 display.

The Ubuntu installer third party software is for mp3 codec and flash only as far as I'm aware. There are plenty of more codecs in the restricted extras package and medibuntu (including the encrypted dvd playback library) that are not installed by default in Ubuntu.
I was pleasantly surprised on installing Mint 11 the other day when I didn't have to go through the usual installation procedures and how nautilus generated the video thumbnails for all my media immediately after a fresh install (indicating the support for that codec in use was there already).
Edit: just an afterthough, when installing the NVidia proprietary drivers your plymouth splash screen won't change in Mint (because it doesn't exist ;-))
