Bit Defender: Can't find anything to use to install it
Avast: Sucks period
AVG: Will try tonight through command-line
Avira: Have not downloaded yet

Which of those four are best? A friend of mine suggested Avira and I've seen others say Bit Defender....what does everyone else here think?

i think you dont need an antivirus if you're using ubuntu.
While on Windows I used Avast a lot, I liked its automatic updates and as I saw a couple of months ago it has a DEB package ready for isntallation

Well, a while ago, I tried to enable the "Dislike button" on Facebook, not knowing it was a scam, I did it like ten times, so I just have a bunch of Maleware chilling in my laptop, just taking up space. I wanna remove it so I have more free space. Lol

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BitDefender I have ClamAV and BitDefender installed, but I do not use them. I do not share any files with Windows systems and I do not download executables for Linux from untrusted sites.

Moving this thread to Recurring Discussions.

Careful with facebook! My fb account was once sending spam to other users and I knew nothing about it. Only way to get rid of it was changing my password. I dont know how I got it but seems FB staff dont care.

Nevertheless anti virus software on Linux is handy even though not essential :-)

I know Linux does not need anti-virus, this is for the Windows computers in my house that connect to my laptop via Samba to keep the WINDOWS clients free of viruses because Norton has expired on them. Parents have yet to repurchase a new license, hence the whole anti-virus topic in the first place. I don't need nor care for anti-virus on my own system, except that again, Windows clients access my Samba shared folder.

For Windows you should use MS Security Essentials. It is free.

As for the Linux I recommend an AV which has a Windows version, such as BitDefender, so that you can have an AV with up to date signatures.

www.en.wikipedia.org/Comodo_Internet_Security

Comodo Internet Security is currently ranked number 1 in Matousec's Proactive Security Challenge, and passing 100% of the 148 software firewall tests, and is the only firewall and host intrusion prevention system to consistently score number 1 or tie for number one (usually with Online Armor) in all independent tests; it has never left first place since version 3.14.13009 released in June 2008, and as a firewall and HIPS application, even this nearly three-year old software still passes 100% of the latest security tests, the only software of that era to pass more than 70% (Zone Alarm Pro v7 from the same time passes only 27%).

Also I found this - Comparision between BitDefender + CIS (http://antivirus-software.findthebest.com/compare/2-56/BitDefender-Total-Security-2010-2010-Anti-Virus-Software-vs-Comodo-Internet-Security-Free-Version-2010-Anti-Virus-Software)

A Comparision Chart showing CIS scoring above BitDefender in the antivirus category (3rd best) :P

Yes, the last sentence implies scanning the samba shares. The OP wants an AV for Linux.

Well, I no longer need it for my Linux system (removed the Malware myself), now needed for Samba and other networking purposes. =)

Are there any guides on this site on how to set up Ubuntu Server 10.04 properly?
