I'm having a karaoke party, using Youtube mainly.

Is there any plugin to make some realtime audio effects on the microphone e.g. echo/reverb?

Ubuntu 11.04 if that matters.

Jack should be able to do it, although it might be kinda overkill for your needs.

Appreciated, like you say it seems like a monster. Does it take up a lot of resources, I'm doing this on a small netbook?

Any smaller alternatives that you know of?

Audacity MIGHT be able to do realtime stuff, but I'm not sure.

Audacity does not do real time effects. Jack does not use up much cpu however, people have used it on netbooks for audio work, it all depends on your latency: keep it high. You can use jack rack for an effects host.
Then you will need to find out how to make youtube work with jack:
