Trying to get a nvidia geforce 9200m gs grahics card inside a HP G60 -120 EM to correctly diplay via Twinveiw or other on to a LG TV 42 LD 450 through a HDMI cable connected HDMI to HDMI ( Windows does it out of the box ) am running dual boot with unity and natty


+++ UPDATE have got twinview with some editing to :-
Display full screen on tv but laptop is now displaying 6 strangely formatted screens all at low resoulution ?

Anyone any ideas please !

Hi , I could really really really - benefit from some help ! please :confused: I have been trying to sortb this for a while now 24 hrs between cups of coffee !

I have connected a HP G60 120 - EM dual boot laptop to a LG TV 42 LD 450 using a HDMI to HDMI cable, as it is configured as a dual boot machine I tried configuring it on the windows side and it echoes the laptop display to the TV no problems in 1920x1080.

So I hoped that on flip-side used mostly and natty installed that Nvidia X Server config would work - unfortunately not !

N.b Nvidia Xserver does see the LG TV and the Xorg log files report that the edid information is incorrect from the TV


1. TV is turned on and hdmi channel selected when laptop booted through Linux, TV still reports no signal ! have currently tried both proprietary nvidia drivers

Laptop internal graphics card is a GEFORCE 9200 M - TV is a LG 42 LD 450

2. The XSERVER shows both displays ! please see attached picture


however MONITORS only shows one display

Hi,

I am having the same problem getting another LG TV over HDMI to work with Ubuntu. I am trying to connect a 47LG450-ZA using a nVidia ION from a ASRock ION 330 over HDMI. The EDID is inconsistant with itself or so it says in teh Xorg.0.log and I get the same messages as you do in the log. Did you ever manage to get this working? I have been trying for hours and have got nowhere so any help would be appricited.

In a nutshell NO ! - Again unfortunately Windoze does it ! - Linux does not - out of the box - please see below !

I also spent a very long time trying to get my partners LAPTOP to see/speak/drive the TV via both devices HDMI plugs and a HDMI lead.

CONCLUSION drawn

The windows interface was maybe written knowing the contents/requirements of the NVIDIA card/driver so just works !

The UBUNTU/Linux configuration sees the Nvidia drivers as a black box and misses some stuff out and so fails !

What is STRANGE !

When you FIRST install natty both screens are driven and WORK fine via the HDMI cable no problem ( shows it can be done ! ) but on reboot after standard config - well NADA !

It reminds me of when Linux was in its infancy after Minix and on the install - LINUX normally drove the screen you had fine, but on the reboot you were presented with GARBAGE.

My suggestion - for what it is worth - and it could solve our problem too - is " Find out how to keep the default UBUNTU boot / install settings that make both screens work on install and give us the chance - if we want to screw the settings up ! instead of having it done for us ! - inadvertantly so to speak

So I am stuck too ! - I don't think the EDI info is at all useful as my conflicting software probes indicate - If we could keep the UBUNTU install config for the graphics that works ! - Then all should be well !

QUESTION / REQUEST for you Pgordon ) ( Have you tried booting with the install disk and do both screens echo each other ! ) - would confirm my reasoning ! - Maybe we could ask the development team to address if possible in next mod ?
Yours Raoul - My girl is forced to use windows to watch films and dvds and the like at present which is a shame - maybe a graphics expert will read this thread and be able to help us !

You could try
Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
this will disable the mode validation against the EDID vertical & horizontal freq

It may be easier to let the driver create all the sections in xorg.conf by running separate X screens just for now.

Using nvidia-settings
I would turn off twinview & select separate X screens.
setup resolutions needed
save to xorg.conf.
reboot or logout/login.

Then edit the DFP-1 (LG TV) monitor to have vertical freq range 48 - 76 Hz, horizontal 24 - 70KHz (safe guessatimate)
I would widen the existing monitor vertical freq to 58 -76Hz.

You should have 2 monitor & 2 device & 2 screen sections.

With twinview enabled there only needs to have 1 screen section.

The OP initial problem was complicated by using..

Option "UseEDID" "False"
& not targeting this option to the external DFP-1 only.
(it may be that nvidia-xconfig generated this setup not the user)

But then not providing a specific mode to use.

By using the keywords
Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
the monitor section frequency ranges will be used to over-ride only the EDID frequency info.

Could add this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Option "ModeDebug" "TRUE"
to get more info into the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The root cause of the problem could be that 9200 chipset can not read the EDID.
So is any of the EDID data valid ?

From searching the web..it seems the LG LD 450 has EDID problems with windows users as well.
Maybe the TV needs a firmware update.

This suggests a better picture with DVI-HDMI adapter cable because of different EDID data.
The same source concludes that both ATI & nVidia can not do 4:4:4 color sampling over direct HDMI-HDMI, possibly linked with carrying HDMI audio.
(color sampling is important for PC display)

The LG service manual states HDMI1 & HDMI2 connection report different EDID info.

You can take the LG out of Goldstar but not the Goldstar out of LG!

Hi

And finally - I have a clone display on my LG TV of the desktop on the laptop via hdmi to hdmi cable :D

N.b. no sound yet but that will start another thread perhaps !

THE current FIX ( Bodge - workaround )

The edid reported by the TV is bad in the log ! - even when i pulled it using a program similar to powerstrip its still bad !

So I used the laptop edid and made a directory for it and copy - renamed it - changed the permissions etc and viola I can now actually use nvidia con-fig correctly ! (right off - below all work now etc )

Obviously I will try to get a correct LG edid as I have 3 different ones so far ! and you cant edit them as binary without sorting the checksum as the NV driver kicks them out ! PHEW !

so hope all helps heres my working xorg.conf hope it helps !

I found these when looking for info about LG EDID bugs.

say goodbye to HDMI audio tho..but HDMI audio seems to prevent using 4:4:4 color sampling & this is required for PC desktop screen.

You need windows to run the Phoenix editor..

The linux read-edid tool only works with 32bit machines.

Some info I found suggests the DVI-HDMI connected monitor returns different EDID & the display HDMI ports are not identical.
Maybe the HDMI input mode (PC or video) changes the EDID reported.

It looks like the latest nvidia driver ( Linux ) has not been programmed to read TWO block EDIDS hence why I have got the display to work with a generic one block edid !

The two block edid supplied, it would appear correctly by my LG ( TV ) 42 LD 450-ZA but is being not parsed correctly by the driver and is reporting weird info to Xorg.log.

FIX - ask nvidia to change driver 173? and co, to see two block edids this will enable audio too I think !

Must be why the windows setup on same laptop works fine
