Is there any way to change the GDM theme in Xubuntu?

You can change some things - the backdrop and the style of the window. The usually-recommended method is here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1726016&highlight=gdm+login+theme), and there's a new app to do it in a really easy, point-and-click way here (http://www.webupd8.org/2011/05/change-gdm-theme-background-in-ubuntu.html#more).

I just tried both of these methods on Xubuntu 11.04, and neither are changing the background image of gdm. Any other thoughts?

Make sure the background image is somewhere that is accessible by the gdm account (which is the account that gdm is run as). The preferred location is /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops.
