On Karmic, and I presume other(s) the numeric keypad will appear to be non-functional, even though the num-lock light is on.
This occurs because of a default setting in:
System → Preferences → Keyboard (Mouse Keys tab)
Uncheck the default "pointer may be controlled using keypad"
