VGA output

[CVGH]

I'd like to use the VGA output and VLC to watch a downloaded avi on my TV. Do I have to configure anything before I plug it in or will I be able to plug it "hot" and then configure another monitor?
I'm using 10.10 on a Dell 9300 laptop with ATI video..
