View Full Version : Evolution needs an overhaul

Last year I installed an Ubuntu machine in one of the offices at work. It's still running well, but the evolution email client is not the best looking or most user friendly email client. Microsoft Outlook seems like a much superior product at the moment.

In an office environment the email client is one of the main programs people use to communicate, so having a good looking, user friendly email client is essential if we want to win people over.

What we need is a good looking email client that is highly compatible with exchange. Most companies use exchange, so it would be alot easier to add Ubuntu machines to the corporate network if those machines could handle email well.

The alternative is Thunderbird with better exchange/address book capability.

Actually, it looks like Evolution is due for an overhaul with 3.2 from what I read. The mockups look great.

I can't find any mock ups :s

I guess it doesn't help having that popular scientific fact taking up the majority of my results.

I did a search on "Evolution Mail" to avoid all the scientific results ;)

Those are some great mock ups! I hope to see them a reality soon!

Sort of, I thought he was talking about Evolution 3.2 mockups that are in the works, from what I can see there are no plans to make those mockups into actual designs and there is no major gui overhaul on the roadmap.

They are mentioned on the "Future Planning" page (https://live.gnome.org/Evolution/PlanningFuture), so it looks like they're at least being "considered", though with no real roadmap...

I just want Thuderbird. if Ubuntu will separate its self from Gnome, we should move over to better applications.

Hello,

Personally I like Evolution over Thunderbird due to its exchange support. Evolution 3 looks good, but I just wish it were in the repo. (Building from source tonight)

Ubuntu should not seperate fillu from Gnome as many applications use GTK for rendering.

I truely Ubuntu should be able to play nicely with many desktop interfaces (gnome/gnome3/unity/KDE/e17/etc), this is the reason I personally went with Ubuntu. Unfortunately having the ability to switch UI's is vanishing quickly

Ubuntu cannot separate form GTK, but it would be cool to see them creating unity from the ground up with out gnome.

Considering how inconsistent they've been with Unity so far, I worry about the troubles they'd have doing a complete DE by themselves.

I like the mockups. I'm not a big fan of GTK themes in apps. I think sometimes they look too lazily designed and ugly. Current Evolution is a good example of that.

Someone suggested Thunderbird. By all means add thunderbird if possible, but only if decent exchange connectivity and corportate address book can be addded properly. The email client needs to work well in existing offices.
