Connecting to a scanner on a LAN

Hello all.
I want to use a scanner connected to another computer over my home LAN. Is that possible? Simple Scan and Xsane can't seem to find it. My scanner is actually a multi-functional HP printer.

Simplescan easily found my HP MFP on a network. No tweaks, no setting changes. Just like magic. It was great.
