I have an odd problem I can't figure out. I've added lifera to the programs that start automatically on logging into my account, and from what I can tell from gnome system monitor the program does start. However, it doesn't appear on the screen in any way. No window appears, nothing in Unity's Launcher, I can't ALT-Tab (unsurprisingly considering).

Any ideas?

I've got the same problem, and I'm just as puzzled. Pidgin starts up without trouble and displays its icon in the notification area, but liferea doesn't show up there. It did in 10.10. I'm using the GNOME interface, FWIW, and not Unity.

If you start liferea again, it will bring up the window of the existing instance, but you have to leave it minimized, and it (I think) doesn't tell you when new posts happen.
