I dislike spam. I really dislike spam.
And I see lots of it everywhere. This forum included. Mostly it's a few bots that keep on spamming their stuff. Wouldn't simply requiring (login to post and the registration process including) a CAPTCHA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA) get rid of that problem?

Thats not on the forum. That sort of spam is sent to the Ubuntu mailing list, which is echoed on the forum. The forum guys can't stop that, and there is a lot

The spam actually detracts from the forums main page where the latest threads are listed. These days there is a lot of spam. Maybe they can exclude posts from the mailing list so it does not appear on the main page latest threads/post or whatever it is called.

I can tell you that it is getting way out of hand...
But that's not only on the forums, my private mailbox is seeing a huge increase lately too (or more is getting through the filters at least).
The jibberish is there to fool the filters. Sometimes, the real spam message is in an attached jpeg (stripped by the import software).

Fight back against the spammers, and filter the spam to the best of your ability.
There's tons of filter programs on all OSes..
and to fight back you have www.bluesecurity.com
just alien the rpm to a deb and install.

I'm not experiencing the same thing -- I'm making my own spam filter for fun, but Gmail's spam filter is so efficient that I have not had a single piece of spam!!! For once in my entire life, I actually wanted spam and I don't get any..
So it is Gmail or just me?

So it is Gmail or just me?My gmail account does an excellent job of filtering this stuff out. I unfortunately also have two other accounts that are active and necessary that don't filter as well.

So it is Gmail or just me?I think it's gmail. It took about a year, but it seems like my gmail address hit the spammers' lists and now, I get about a spam a day- but it all gets labeled as spam.

Wow, Just checked my gmail and I got 40 spams from ubuntu forums  lol just kidding, guess I may need to change my notification type somewhat hehe
Actually my gmail has 4 spam all caught and its been a few days since ive checked it. My yahoo though gets about 100 per week.
The problem with the mailing list spam is that it totally screws up teh "get unanswered post" search I frequently go througgh their tohelp someone whose thread has 0 replies but the spam makes it alot harder as it pushes legitamate post off the list.
Bit of a tip to thwart email spam is to use 1 account at say yahoo and foward your inbox to gmail. therefore you never give your gmail out and you have 2 layers of protection.

In related news, as you know, the original blue frog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Frog) project went belly up but there will be a new kid in town, okopipi. (the blue poison dart frog)
http://www.okopipi.org/
They're currently looking for developer talents. Looks like a very interesting project IMHO

I'm moving this to Forums Discussion--seems that that would be more appropriate for a feature request.

Ok, so once a week, we have an Ubuntu spam day, say, Saturday.
Someone posts the e-mail address of a Spammer and everybody on the forums has to send at least 10 e-mails with a 5Mb attachment to the spammers mailbox.
Revenge is not a cure, but it makes you feel good for 5 minutes :)

well, spam, egg, sausage, and spam hasn't got much spam in it! ;)
I've actually been seeing less spam lately, but more phishing. Now people have started using the bank that I work for to phish people--- makes my job a lot more tedious.

Count me in
I don't think it will ever catch on with the majority here, so in the meantime why not try spam baiting:
http://www.419eater.com/
The whole idea is to reply to those e-mails you get from some place in Africa that say you could have $48,000,000 or something like that and the spammer requests your bank account details. 419-baiting is just e-mailing them back and basically annoying them whilst never having the intention of actually giving them any real info.
