hello forum,
running the beta script for dapper found here,[1] it slows at 33/36 point in the downloading package info screen... [the show progress individual files list indicates several "failed"s among the "done" and "hit" (?)]
second to last info screen shows:
could not apply changes. fix broken packages first.
and what looks like a half-way-to-a-terminal screen shows:
cp ..cannot create regular file /etc/X11/gdm.Init/Default: no such file or directory.
any thoughts, ideas, pointers greatly appreciated. i'm otherwise enjoying ubuntu's functionality.
thanks in advance.

I get this could not apply changes. fix broken packages first. as well. And I just reinstalled the operating system so there couldn't possibly have been any broken packages!

Can you try not selecting nvidia/ati and trying again?

One of the solutions is leaving the 3d-graphics boxes unchecked, but since I'm only a newbie; I don't know of this will cause any problems in the future.

Same error. Tried to do it without selecting nvidia / ati, same error again.
I get the same error with the program. Has anyone found a fix for it yet?
try opening a terminal and running
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --configure -a
and re-running easyubuntu selecting what you want, does that fix the error?

I am getting the same problem. I'm on a fresh install on my laptop and right off the bat installed automatix, then went to easyubuntu. Easy is not working, and I think it's the repos. I'm getting this error:
http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/dists/dapper/free/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 404 Not Found
http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/dists/dapper/non-free/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 404 Not Found
On my desktop, easy will run fine, but it still gives this error. Also, on my laptop, easy seems to detect previously installed software, whereas it ignores this on my desktop.

seems freecontrib have redone their directory structure to
http://packages.freecontrib.org/freecontrib/dists/dapper/free/binary-i386/Packages.gz
rather than the link in the script, so am going to try the nightly snapshot as copied below from the downloads page

You can also download the nightly generated archive of EasyUbuntu and get it running by following the steps below. Open a terminal from Menu -> Accessories -> Terminal and paste the code below.
wget http://users.on.net/~goetz/EasyUbuntu/current.tar.bz2
tar -jxvf current.tar.bz2
cd EasyUbuntu_2006-XX-XX
sudo python easyubuntu.in

grr, do not speak python, so am unable to edit the links correctly,
the nightly snapshot points to the same old directory structure.

yes easy needs to be updated with the new links.
I have the same problem. I've tried going through all the easy steps except the last button click...then going in and modifying the file by hand in the sources.list file. It then tries to go to the new sources.list location but still says it can't find what we need, even though the error message shows the new path. I put the path in my sources.list for just synaptic alone and ran synaptic without errors, so the new location seems to be correct.
Therefore something in the easy code needs to be updated for the new location.

Tried a fresh install of ubuntu with developer version of easyubuntu (because the others had not worked before).
Real Media stream - says no plugin is installed.
Microsoft Media stream - says:
totem could not play "fd://0"
only a subtitle stream was detected. Either you are loading a subtitle file, or some other type of text file, or the media was not recognized.
both were tested from www.cspan.org streams.

Hi
I installed Automatix and after using it for my NVidia drivers and multimedia codecs, I found that MP3's just will not play. So I tried EasyUbuntu.
I'm also having the problem of the "fix broken packages first" problem.
I've attached a screenshot of a message:

Looks like they're working on it. (https://launchpad.net/products/easyubuntu/+bug/53319)
