View Full Version : [ubuntu] Printer status switches between 'Idle' and 'Stopped' randomly; printing not possible

Setup:
- HP LaserJet 1200
- IBM X40 laptop
- Ubuntu 10.10
- Also tested in 11.04 beta 2

The problem:
I generally can't print, regardless of which USB port the printer is connected to. The status of the printer in the Ubuntu 'Printer Properties' tool switches between 'Idle' and 'Stopped - Unplugged or turned off' every few seconds.

I have only once managed to get the printer working, which involved deleting the printer from the 'Printing' window, leaving the USB cable plugged in, and rebooting. This doesn't seem to work any more.

The printer is probably not to blame: a colleague (running a different distro) generally has no trouble using it. I don't have trouble using USB devices on the X40 generally, so I imagine it probably isn't a hardware problem as such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
