Ok where to start

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro Laptop

The dvd drive doesnt work,
It wont boot from USB or external dvd

I installed current version of Ubuntu using xp that used to be on here before i used Ubuntu to wipe hard drive for Ubuntu alone system,

Everything works fine except for dvd rom,
and it only had a 40gb hdd in it,
But i just got a new 120gb hd for it and tried to install but can not get to boot to external dvd or usb.

I have a external sata dock, and i am wondering if anybody can tell me is it possible to install, ubuntu 10.10 on new hard drive via dock before putting into laptop?

To install ubuntu 10.10 last time i was able to get it to force a reboot to external dvd from winxp.

I am a ubuntu mm newb. So if there is a way can you please give me a step by step run through.

P.s the install onto new sata drive onto dock will be from inside current install of ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks for any help in advanced
