there's no big difference except Kubuntu uses KDE as a Desktop while Ubuntu uses GNOME. Installing KDE in Ubuntu you will get Kubuntu

This, also KDE comes with some different default packages to Gnome if you load KDE onto Ubuntu you will be able to see your old Gnome packages too.

They say that KDE is "easier for new users" because it "looks like Windows."

I disagree! All the strange names for the KDE applications was confusing, KDE was complicated and slow on my modest hardware.

I find Gnome much simpler, and Xfce (Xubuntu) simpler yet, easier, and much faster)! Best for new users in my opinion: Xubuntu!

Ubuntu the default desktop environment is GNOME
Kubuntu the default desktop environment is KDE
about the software, there's no much different from each other

to best use, for beginner use Ubuntu
because it's more simple than Kubuntu

cheers :P

Ubuntu uses Gnome and Kubuntu uses KDE. When I started using Ubuntu I found Gnome much easier than KDE(maybe its personal :P). KDE needs alot more system resources than gnome and the apps are named in a queer way(Mostly everything starts with K) while gnome applications are named on the basis of what they do. But in the end it boils down to personal preference try both their live CD's or run both of them in a virtual machine and see which one you like.

Good Luck :)

As others have said, it really all comes down to what you feel most comfortable using.

When I first started with Linux 6 years ago I used KDE almost exclusively.

Nowadays, I use Gnome or Openbox/Xfce.

An even easier way to check it out, as someone said, just add the kubuntu-desktop to ubuntu, and you can choose which desktop environment to login to.

i find KDE to be much easier to use because its much easier to find what youre looking for.

for example, if youre looking for k3b, you can just type k, or k3 and then hit enter with its start menu that works just like vista or window 7's.

In the start menu, it often displays WHAT the program does and under it, it displays the name.

its resource stamp is higher than gnomes, but not by much.

It has a control panel, so thats a major plus.

Finding programs is faster in kde because its not just a massive list which results in needle-in-a-haystack searching. KDE finds things for you and you can pin programs to the start menu.

Theming in kde is easier, because it downloads themes and installs it for you.its very intuitive. in gnome you either extract the theme files in the correct folder or drag and drop it into the themer thing, and thats a pain imo.

I almost want to say its factually incorrect to say gnome is simpler. When it comes to speed, its objective, and KDE trumps gnome because you can find the program youre looking for faster. I usually just hit the "windows" button, type the first two letters and hit enter and get what i want.

you cant do that with gnome by default. if it goes beyond default, it adds challenge, even if its minimal.

gnome is less customizable. kde has features out the ***, and its sort of a tradition.

You need to search for directions for "dual boot installation". That will help you do what you want.:)

if you already have ubuntu on your machine just goto synaptic and install the kubuntu desktop.

Theres no need for partitioning for a mere desktop environment. It would be like dual booting because you want one OS to have AIM, and the other to have MSN.

If you merely want to "test" a DE, I would advise VirtualBox.

Yes you can install and run KDE along with Gnome, xfce, *box, etc, the "problem" with that approach is clutter. You will soon have not 1 but 3 text editors (gedit, kate, and leafpad), etc, cluttering up your menu.

Similarly , are you going to use GDM or KDM to log in ? What will you use as a file manager ? How about managing the network ? Install packages ? Manage users ? Both gnome and KDE have tools to do all these things.

Are you sure these tools do not conflict ?

Most users settle into one or another of the various DE / WM.

If they dont like KDE or Gnome etc they can just uninstall it.
If they use it on their machine, theyre getting a real experience based on their hardware, as opposed to a VM which requires drivers that are probably not the ones they use.

I would recommend using GNOME. It works best with Ubuntu. If you want KDE, Arch Linux KDE is the best choice.

So do you see now that everyone has their opinion of what it is best? :)

I could give you mine too, but what's the use. You are the only one that can say what you like best. One is not necessarily better than the other.

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE, yes. I haven't seen the movie, but I assume he used KDE on his dekstop. Obviously it wasn't needed for his servers :p

well, thank you. now my question is solved. i kept wondering if it would be the windows classic, but judging from some application, i know it would be linux..:)
