ok so when i start guildwars teamspeak and any other audio im running shuts off and guildwars takes over. how might i fix this?

I think you need to use a sound card with hardware mixing?
e.g. The SB Live.

im useing my onboard 5.1 that came with a new dell xps400 i need a hardware sound? which might you reccomend for compatiblity?

The Soundblaster Live, is fairly cheap these days. They are also well supported by Ubuntu, & probably everything else on the market. They are no longer cutting edge technology, that does not mean that they aren't still a great card.
I use a SBlive Entertainment 5:1 suround sound capable card.
Try to buy oem, meaning no fancy box. The one that manufacturers use when putting together a machine. You will save money, & cardboard! :KS
By the way, hardware mixing is a capability of the processing chip on the card. Not all sound cards have this ability.
