View Full Version : [ubuntu] Bypassing University Firewall with VPN?

So I'm at my wits end right about now. The problem is, my university has a strict firewall. They pretty much only allow HTTP traffic through. The problem for me is that I can't run ANY of my applications on my laptop because the ports are being blocked. I can't run Putty, I can't connect to Webmin on my server, I can't remote connect to my desktop at home, the only thing I CAN do is run Skype.

Now I know what you all are thinking, but there is nothing that I want to do that is not legal, however having almost all my applications blocked on my laptop is a real pain in the a**. I just want access to my programs!!!

So I do have a regular proxy and an Internet proxy (glype) on my home server that I can connect to, but that does nothing for me because it still doesn't allow my programs to access the Internet.

The solution I was able to think of would be a VPN. I used to have Openvpn installed, so I know how to use it. The question I have is, will setting up a VPN help me bypass the firewall? I'm not even sure if VPN's are allowed to be used at my University, but I'd use it if it helped me tunnel my Internet to bypass the firewall. If a VPN does work, what UDP port should I use? Is it possible to put it on port 80 and still have everything work right? If the University blocks the port that the VPN uses, which port should I set the VPN server to so that it can work?

Thanks for any and all help.

Your University has the policy in place for a reason, we won't help you here, as this is considered an illegal activity. If you want access to your server, I would suggest you talk to the IT department. Closed.
