View Full Version : [all variants] Streaming media from Ubuntu to TV
March 3rd, 2011, 08:07 PM
I'm dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu Maverick on both a laptop and a desktop, of course using Ubuntu for as much as I can. Now, I've also got a new Sony Bravia TV that is connected to my home network. I've found it so incredibly easy to stream media from my computers to the TV under Win7 and it really bites me because I want it to be like that in Ubuntu too. But it isn't. Can anybody point me to some good newbie sources for streaming media from Ubuntu to a network-connected TV?

Sounds like you need ps3mediaserver (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/), a PPA can be found here (https://launchpad.net/~paissad/+archive/pms-linux/+packages). You could also give MiniDNLA (http://sourceforge.net/projects/minidlna/) a try.

Thanks a lot oracle2b. ps3mediaserver seems to work. Not quite as easy as Windows but easy enough not to bother me. Now, I just have to figure out how to make ps3mediaserver not show directories that I haven't listed as shared. At the moment, it seems the TV can browse the entire computer I'm running ps3mediaserver on, which isn't quite what I'm after.
