Anyone involved with a FOSS User Group?

Though we had 20 or more people active in our local LUG at one point, it folded a few months ago due to a lack of guidance and support. I'm getting with a few people from the LUG to form a new local FOSS Users Group that'll be more heterogeneous when it comes to operating systems and focus more on FOSS in general.

Is anyone involved with such a group? Or would you be if one was around you? Just curious.

Yes, I'm a member of a local Free Software, Free Society (http://shop.fsf.org/product/free-software-free-society-2/) advocacy group. We split from a LUG a few years ago due to the Linux / GNU/Linux schism, so we now mostly focus on ideology, legal, licence and privacy issues and not so much on the software itself.

Heh... Is it me, or is having a Linux User Group like trying to herd a group of cats?

It is unfortunate, but the irony of the disintegration of local Linux groups is amazing.

I have been helping to form a local LUG. So far we have a physical space for meetings and server space donated by a local ISP. We have a basic website up, NorCalLUG.org (http://norcallug.org), but now we just have to spread the word and get some people interested. We haven't really publicized it at all yet. I am not really sure honestly how to go about the publicity aspect. I just moved to this town fairly recently and I don't really know any local Linux users. I'm curious about others experiences with LUGs or Open Source Software Groups too. Any advice that might be helpful to us in forming our LUG would be appreciated.
