hi to all. i just recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a linux cd onto a hd that originally had windows xp on it. i chose to overwrite the windows and use the entire HD for Ubuntu. the install seemed to go well, but after it prompted me to restart and remove disc a command type prompt appears that says "GRUB>" I was under the impression that it was supposed to load to a desktop but instead i get the ""GRUB>" prompt. Please help.

Welcome to the forums :-)
The Grub prompt means that Grub was not installed successfully and there is a problem with your boot setup. What we need to do you is to boot and Ubuntu Live CD/USB and post the output of bootinfoscript as per instructions here.
While posting, click the # icon in post menu and paste your text in between the generated [code] tags for readability purposes as this will be a long output.
