Hey all,

I just got a new (refurbished) laptop
that came with a 'vanilla install' of Windows7.

It is an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad Z61t. ( beautiful machine).

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 last night, (on it's own partition)
and after the install all seemed fine, and I booted into Ubuntu with no problems.

So, I setup Ubuntu, got it all how I like it,
then decided I'd better boot up windows to make sure it was ok,
All seemed fine, So I shut it down and went to bed.

This morning I booted'er up,
and tried to boot Ubuntu, but I was brought to the "shell".
Gnome desktop won't come up, no matter what I do.

Granted.. I really am not sure what to do in this situation,
but I thought I knew enough to be able to get out of shell and into my desktop. But I guess I do not!

What do I do to get back to my new Ubuntu 'desktop'.

Im not sure what commands to use to sort this out,
and my searchings are proving to be less than helpful.

If anyone can help me recover me new Ubuntu partition,
I would appreciate it greatly. <3

Just tell me what to do and I will do it! lol

Many thanks. <3

in the words of the brilliant roger waters..

hello hello hello is there anybody in there?

just nod if you can hear me.
is there anyone home!? lol

This is really tempting me to just wipe the windows and do a full Ubuntu install on this machine..

I figured I would try to keep the windows partition,
Since I have removed windows from every other machine I have...
and this win7 seems to be nicer than any other windows..

but,
If I am not going to be able to boot my Ubuntu install..
I guess windows will have to go. lol

I feel this probably shouldnt be too hard to fix..
i just dont know where to start. :/

We frown upon impatience, such as this display,...

Now I cant even install Ubuntu.

god this sucks.

It just hangs at the "make sure you have an internet connection, plugged into power, and 2.6 GB of space" screen.
and hangs, and hangs, and hangs.

I cant do anything.

Worst part is I gave the damn ubuntu partition 100 GB, and left 60 for the windows partition.

Now Im stuck with a dinky windows partition, that I dont even want.

Yeah, this sucks.

13 hours!
But finally got it!

Jeez..
I had to literally go into GParted and just destroy partitions until they were unrecognizable by GRUB.

Then stuck the live CD in,
and zoomed right past the step where it kept freezing on me.

Interesting.. lol\Wish i knew what happened, technically.
lol

It's installing as usual on the laptop now.

ahh, it will feel like it's mine, soon! lol :P
