I have used Ubuntu for 2 weeks and have pretty much got a grasp of the graphical side of things! I need to get an overview in detail of how to do various things at the command line and not rely on googled snippets of long time Linux pseudo intellectuals. Please could someone point me to detailed FULLY EXPLAINED tutorials on the basics of the following.

I want to patch special drivers etc that are available on various web sites ie not using Synaptic or various repositories. I need to learn the file structure of Ubuntu how to navigate around the file system. I need to know about Mr Sudo and all his friends ie make. make install ls patch etc. Thus I need to know how to get some source code for a driver patch get it into a file where that driver is, compile and install it. Could someone point me to a learning process to do this as I do not want to spend my entire summer vacation googling snippets of information from, to be quite frank supercilious Linux experts who begrudgingly drop bread crumbs from their table of knowledge and when asked questions from beginners reply " I am not a babysitter" or similar. Despite this rant I am loving finding out about Ubuntu Linux!!

Long time Windows simpleton!!
