Hello there.

I cannot use the mic/input jack on my notebook computer. I must have shorted it out somehow when trying to plug a headphone without looking.

Now I cannot use the mic input to do voice chat or record sound. How can I get back to using the mic input again?

My specs are the ff:
Asus X51R
Celeron M 1.7Ghz
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100
2GB DDR RAM
120 GB HDD SATA
PCMCIA bay/slot
4 USB slots; 2 back panel 2 on right
DVD Combo drive
WFI Atheros
RealTech soundcard, broken mic input, good working stereo output jack (good for headphones), speakers still okay.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx x86

check hardware sound detection: system pref sound

install gnome-alsamixer with synaptic, then set your prefs: sound levels and mute/unmute (Applications sound alsamixer)
