Hi,
I've recently moved from Gentoo, over this way and was wandering about games that require the original files.

Things like openttd, rtcw and nwn have ebuilds in Gentoo. All you have to do is either copy in the original files or put them somewhere that portage knows about. Does Ubuntu do anything like this? I cant find packages for any of the previous games (and am having trouble compiling openttd). If Ubuntu does this, can we make a list of packages that need to be made? (Similar to this thread (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-295627.html)) They also have a thread for games that require the original data files (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-268837.html).
If Ubuntu doesn't do this, can we start? I think it would simplify the installation of commercial and non-free games...

I look foward to hearing your responses,

Cheers.

As far as I am aware there are no official ubuntu packages to do this sort of thing. It should be trivial to set up though - it's more of a scripting thing than an ubuntu thing per se. Games like neverwinter have .bin files that install the data on your cd. Putting that file in the .deb and telling it where to look for the game data should be trivial. OTOH it doesn't seem like a very ubuntu thing to do. Maybe some unofficial repository somewhere could handle it?

hmm,
Could it be in a multiverse type place? Also, this could include things like Suns Java vm's, ColdFusion and other things like that...

right. ubuntu only has a few things like this as far as i have seen. they have a quake 2 placeholder and that seems to be about it......

you could always just install the games from thier respective installers. the list i created that i stickied has the links to a few, like the nwn installer.

unreal games have the installers on the discs.
