I am a completely blind user, was using windows7 with NVDA before which worked okay for me. I do want to use ubuntu and have installed it on a second computer. I have installed everything I could find relating to text to speech/screenreaders.
I now have espeak? and festival on the orca (mbrola installed but can't find it in orca).
I have tried as many voice/synthesizer settings and combinations that I could but I can't understand any of them :(
I have a hearing problem and use headphones but still none are clear enough for me to understand. I tried to download a trial cepstral voice but it said I didn't have the rights to install it.

anyone with any suggestions?

thank you

Hi,

I am not sure if you have had any joy with your TTS issue under Ubuntu. I have been running a project called open-sapi which is an attempt to the windows SAPI speech engines working under linux. It is still under development but I think this might solve your problem. I have taken a long break but if I have someone who will use the system and test as i go along then i will try and pick up the project again. I have have various paid and free voices working with orca when running in Ubuntu. There are still stability issues but is still a work in progress. I hope this might enable you to carry on your work with Ubuntu. Let me know and we can do some work together to get you up and running.
