Hello,

I'm sure many of you are aware of the recent performance issues that have been affecting the usability of the site in general. Please know that we too, are aware of these issues, and are working together with Canonical to try and resolve them as soon as possible.

The main problem people seem to be seeing is that the forum reports that you have already posted, you must wait 20 seconds between posts, or it simply double/triple/quadruple posts your single post. If this happens, please do not click the submit button again. Your post will go through eventually. Even a single click has been known to create more than 1 post.

If you happen to come across multiple posts that are identical, please use the report feature to bring this to the attention of the staff, who will do their best to tidy it up and keep threads readable.

Thank you for your patience while we work through this, it's greatly appreciated.

PLEASE NOTE:
To try and keep performance at acceptable levels, we have temporarily disabled the following:

Community Cafe
Community Cafe Games
Recurring Discussions
User Albums
Social Groups
Visitor Messages

Please be patient when using the site, we are doing the best we can to get these features/forums re-enabled as soon as we can without them crashing the servers.

Update (Jan 18th): We are currently awaiting additional hardware, which will allow us to re-enable the features listed above. As of now, there is no confirmed date for when this will arrive or be installed, but it is being worked on as a priority issue.

Regards,

The UbuntuForums Staff.

Hi,
First of all a Happy New Year to everyone visiting the Ubuntu forum pages.
Pages which especially lately are slow in loading. Or better put it takes a long time to find the IP-address. I use Google-Chrome and when I click on a link the little circular line on the TAB is rotating slowly CCW until it finally has found the page, then the circular line is rotating fast CW while loading the page.
I only see this happening when opening a page on the Ubuntu forum. Other pages are found fast.

Do others find the same problems as I have with the forum website? As I said before it is only here where I have to wait a long time before the page is loaded.

Sometimes the forum pages seem slow to load when the forum is busy. I've noticed that it usually come right after an hour or two. Occasionally there's a glitch that needs the attention of the admins, but fortunately that doesn't happen too often.

Yes, I understand this happens when the forum is busy, but then it is busy all the time since I experience this all the time. And only with this website. I can surf the net without any delay, all pages are found very fast and load in an instant, except this one. Loading is OK, the speed is high, but finding the website takes forever. With every page I want to load on this site. When I refresh the index page I have to wait 10 seconds or so, when I want to read a thread I have to wait 10 seconds. All the time. It can't only be me, can it?

No, at least you, me and someone else.
While it's not as 'cut and dry' as you've posted, it certainly seems different over the last month or so.
Here it can vary from minute to minute, while likely to be worse when there are 16000+ users vs. 6000, it still has been noticeable at any time.
I had thought it started w/ firefox4, though the browser used doesn't seem to matter.

( there also seems to be a number of inadvertent double and triple posts at times lately...

Same here from time to time as well - possibly the servers have flu.

Not really sure what's going on with them.

This past week between Christmas and New Years I was getting so may time outs, that the forums were unusable. The strange thing was that I could access the forums with my netbook with only one or two timeouts all week.

I attributed it to the system I'm running gnome 3 and gnome shell on, as it is so unstable that if you look at it sideways it crashes. :)

DeMus
January 5th, 2011, 03:56 PM
For me it is always the same: Google-Chrome can't find the page at first and when it has found it, the page is on my screen in the blink of an eye. It looks like DNS is not functioning for the Ubuntu website. Other sites are found very fast, it's just the Ubuntu site.
I remember from several years ago, when I still used the dark side of software, that I could use a file on my own hard disk and use it as DNS info. The browser would first look at that file and when the info was not there, it would look on the net.
Can I also do something like that with Ubuntu, and if so, how would I do that?
There are a couple of sites which I visit frequently and if I could place them in my private list the search for the right IP-address would be very fast.

cariboo907

I don't know if this had anything to do with pages not loading, , but, I was using an SMC Barricade as an access point that is wired in between where the network cable comes into my shop, and my 8 port switch, I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54GS running dd-wrt, and I haven't had a page not found/slow loading error since. The strange thing it that is was only one system suffering from the problem.

I have two other systems and a netbook that didn't suffer from the problem, all connected to the same switch, or access point.

Then again, it could be that it's just that the all the neighborhood kids went back to school again, and they aren't sucking up all the local loops bandwidth,

January 6th, 2011, 05:49 PM
Just another guy having the same problem, every time I surf the UF. Now, when I click something (thread, board, user, etc), the Firefox loading circle would spin for several seconds (3-7, varies), then flash! and it loads. With other sites such as CNN, the flash! comes immediately after clicking.
So there's some minor lagging.

DeMus
January 7th, 2011, 02:56 PM
Be more tolerant perhaps.

That is very difficult. When you look at the end of this post at my computer configuration you see I have a nice computer, I also have a 22.5Mb/s internet connection which runs at full speed. Now waiting for almost 10 seconds every time I open a page is not something I want to get used to.

What I would like to know is, how do others experience the forum site, well the Ubuntu site in general? Is it slow for you as well, or am I the only one?

I also asked a question some days ago to which I have no answer: can I use a local file as "DNS server"? Write down the website name and the IP-address so it can be found very fast.
I could do that in Windows but have no idea how to do it here. Who can help me with this?

I've noted that message a couple of times (like Irihapeti noted) when the mods are altering a thread. In threads that reopen there is usually a post "gone missing" (jailed) or if it doesn't reopen a lock will appear on it when the page is refreshed.

I've had that happen a few times as well. It can also get interesting and confusing when two or more mods are dealing with a reported post at the same time, but that's another story.

For the last 3 or 4 days I have been having serious problems with the site - again!
I have lost posts. I have double-posted 5 or 6 times. I am having huge delays in getting to threads or the PM screen. My record is 9 minutes to get to the PM page, then another 3 minutes to reply to someone!

This afternoon (it's now 4-45pm here) on replying to threads I am receiving the message that I must wait 5 seconds to submit the reply I just submitted. On opening a new tab back to the same forum I sometimes find that my post has actually been posted - even though it says it hasn't. Sometimes the post has not been posted, so I re-submit the post and guess what..........double-post! This is starting to grate a bit now. I have already given up trying to help people twice this week. I don't want to have to stop completely, but this is now getting extremely frustrating.
I know I'm not the only user having this problem, because others have told me they are finding similar difficulties, though not, it seems quite as bad.

It seems that I'm not the only one who has encountered glitches. My tale is similar: for the last month or so my laptop has been sitting on the dining room table waiting for my attention, and as a result I've been using my server box, which is about 5 years old and, although 64 bit, only has one core and only 1Gb RAM with which to do its stuff. I put down some of the slowness I was experiencing to asking too much of it: amongst other things, dishing out web pages when asked, jumping through hoops to keep the spam out, a new search facility on my web site spidering itself, and my using it to visit the forums.

Same problem here (UK) this morning, Friday 14 Jan. 10:30 GMT.

I replied to a thread, clicked "Submit", the icon whirled and whirled, but went nowhere, so I copied the reply I had made, shutdown the forum tab.

I then immediately re-opened the thread, to see that my reply had indeed got through and was already sitting on the thread; it was just that I had no indication from my system that anything had happened.

Very frustrating!

The server loads are currently very high. It's just an unfortunate result of the growth the forum has seen over the last 18 months or so.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I have spoken to people at Canonical regarding the situation, and the search for a solution that works for everybody is ongoing.

Hopefully it'll get sorted soon though :)

It really seems like the back-end database is having serious problems. Perhaps it's in need of some tuning? I've been on other vBulletin forums that have this problem from time to time, but the delays here are worse than I can remember experiencing elsewhere. Have you folks tried simply restarting MySQL and see if that helps?

Like others here, I'm simply going to refrain from posting for a while until this gets straightened out. Every time I post a message, it takes well over two minutes to get a confirmation. If I try and resubmit the posting, I often end up with duplicates. At first I thought it was a time-of-day/load problem, but I'm having these problems at various times including late-night in the -0500 time zone.

FWIW, message previews come up normally. Once the message is posted to the database, I encounter the delays.

Yeah and I had a good LOL last night when the contents of both posts of a double post in one of the forums were blank for a good 5-10 minutes. Couldn't use the "report post" button to get it cleaned up at the time as none existed :)

I have reported the issue to Canonical - they're having a look to see what can be done.

I imagine there's going to be a number of duplicate posts as a result of the slowness, please report these as normal and the staff will clear them up :)
Do you want us to keep reporting the double posts and all, even though you know about them? Also, last I checked, I did not see a sticky here on the slowness to keep these threads to a minimum. Or, it could be a forum announcement in the Ultimate Coffee Grinder. Just my two cents

even though you know about themWe know that multiple posting of posts and threads is occuring - but we obviously don't know each and every one - so yes please, carry on reporting.

Bear in mind that if the forum is playing up we won't be able to do much - so don't report the same thing twice :p

Edit - I would think that an inadvertent bump of an unanswered thread is more important than a double post in an already answered thread - just my thoughts is all

Please be patient. We're aware that there are currently some issues, and are doing our best to keep on top of things while things are getting sorted out. Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/announcement.php?a=69For that I get invalid announcement specified. Earlier I would get an error from the posting proxy timing out.

It may be easy to tell if someone is impatient about slow response when there are multiple, but not identical replies, but difficult to tell what is happening for multiple identical replies.

It is difficult, but the staff see it a lot, and we can usually tell, if you report it in error, nothing will come of it, and nobody will criticise. If you report it and it's acted upon, you'll have done us a favour.

Maybe they should just pay and upgrade the darn forum software. I understand it costs money and all, but if the forums is going to have issues, than that will turn away people who need help.
Looks like I am also now getting a wait 20 seconds between posts, even though this is my first post in this session.
Windows like, isn't it?

Joeb454
January 16th, 2011, 12:08 PM
We have the forum software - but on a forum this size, you can't just upgrade the software without testing it first, to ensure that any plugins used are still compatible, and that there's no significant performance loss with a database this size.

The current issues we're having are related to hardware, rather than software. As I've said before, we're working with Canonical to find a solution

kellemes

vBulletin is able to handle the workload just fine, more often it's the hardware that isn't.

Hey Guys,

I think that the forum should be updated because it seems that its hanging a lot... I mean, you press submit and your waiting 5 mins, and after 5 mins of the chrome spinning symbol, you get a bit mad... I've just accidentally posted something 3 or 4 times because of that, I think its a problem with the net and I refresh and try again, then I realise I have posted something multiple times, meaning that someone like me, may be named a spammer or given a warning on something that isnt really our fault at all... Below, I will give my solution to the problem...

Thanks,
Chris

SOLUTION: I think that the site should be updated, I am sure that the problem is not my end, other websites, some larger than this, can load a lot faster... The solution should be that the site is upgraded to take more people or given an update to the site...

That's already planned as well. But we need to test the new software version and ensure it works with out current plugin selection, and that there's no significant performance loss between the two.

Our current priority is getting the current forum up and running at full capacity once more, before we even consider working on the upgrade again.

Hey Guys,

I am pretty new here, but normally when I am first at a site I would get a plethora of ideas! I normally post them so that I can help the site in some way...

Below is a list of some of the things that I have spotted while only being here for a few weeks! LOL, I hope that is not too many of them...

------------ IDEAS LIST ------------

1.) On the profile page, there should be the option to choose multiple Distros, for example, I have OSX and Windows as "Other Distros" but I can only select one, where it could be changed so its like tags, where you can have multiple operating systems under it...

2.) There should be a syetem that new topics or replies are checked and if the system finds the message has been posted more than once, it deletes the post/reply so there is only one left...

3.) There should be a points system... where people can like or dislike a post and give/take away 1 point, points can help gain levels and sometimes help towards mod powers... each level gets harder to reach by adding more points

------------ END OF LIST ------------

What do you think? I had these ideas... :D

Out stance on "thanks" feature is not very popular. Many sites have a rewarding system, people are used to it and enjoy getting recognition and acknowledgements, it is human :)

We chose a different system, where titles and icons change on a semi-random, semi-magic way as post count increase in support sections. People with 3,500 posts get to choose their title. That is about it.

I am (and I know others on Staff are too) very timid implementing a traditional rewarding system. We have a very large userbase, abuses become moderation nightmares. And in the end, I think a traditional rewarding process is not rewarding at all. It only rewards people who fit in and play well with the process. I like better the way we have it here, it is little abused, when people get new icons or titles, they notice it, they like it and none of the ones having a custom title got it abusing the process. It sort of fits our needs :)

So when will you guys open the community cafe?
Its my favourite place in here!

We will reopen it when it will not impact the forums performance.

Please be patient. The problem is being worked on.

I'd like to take this time to give some serious kudos to the forum admins and moderators. They often get very little respect for what they do and the time they put into making the forums great. It's times like these that we are all reminded that the job is tough, tedious, and near thankless.

And I'd like to add how grateful I am to have a forum where the mods try to ensure that language is kept respectful. I've seen altogether too many snarky put-downs in other places.

I believe he means upgrade the forums. As posted though, they cannot update without testing first to make sure all there plug-ins and such work as before, and it benefits the forum and users altogether.

Well put. It is good that we are being reminded of what they have to do to keep up with us. Also as put by another user, it is really nice that poor language is kept out of here. I can actually be on these forums at school. Isn't that amazing?......

I've been trying to post a question in the Beginner's forum and it has no post in it at all. None what so ever. When I submitted I waited and waited, it gave me a 502 error posted the topic with no post. Is this a forum bug?

I tried re-posting the topic and now the "empty" topic had my post in it, but two topics with the same posts. I reported one to be deleted. Is there something wrong with the forums?

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum to post this in, but seeing feedback I thought it might be.

Still getting double posts in some threads. I am getting them removed though with "Report Abuse".
Also the forums are still slow for me. On a Internet speed test, I get a 45ms Ping time. Could this be why?

Ah I see, I think using the http://ubuntuforums.org/images/buttons/report.gif button would be best to report any duplicates in future, if you want them moved.

As it stands now, we're aware of what the issue is, it's just a matter of sitting and waiting for the solution to be implemented.

I posted this before - then had second thoughts, though it turned out the possible time for a post to appear has increased from what I've previously seen, not what I tend to do.

Anyway i've found that once you click submit the deed is done. Getting a response back to your browser is irrelevant to your post or edit posting - it will, sooner or later.

So here if the browser starts spinning it's wheels I just close it or the tab out, no sense waiting for response, it doesn't matter.

Is it possible for me to delete my own duplicate posts on this forum, rather than just editing the text out ?

Not only have I produced about five copies during the recent hiatus, but I've got some in the wrong order when attempting to clear them up !

PS on the thread that was posted recently re this problem, it mentioned a "reporting procedure" or something like, but I can't find it anywhere.

On most forums, you cant delete post, only mods/admins can do that. This is one of them ones where you cant delete a post. (that is why if you look around enough you'll find some foums with 'posters' who have gotten annoyed forum, then written a script that just wipes every post)

As for the 'reporting', you can hit the "report abuse" button and ask for the post to be deleted. I'd guess that the mods/admins here are flat out with all issues happening here, so I'm not sure if I would report myself (or anybody else) for multiposting. No need to push the dearies any harder than they are already pushed.

BTW, if it seems like you post isnt going through, just wait. Thinking that the posting hasnt worked, going back and hitting the 'post' button again is one way that multipule posts are being created here at the moment.

No I was referring to the thread you referenced in your first post here.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1670708 I see you've edited this - I'll delete it now.

Not http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1670710

While the servers are in a state of flux, if you post a thread or a post and they appear not to be there - they will be.

Same goes for getting a message syaing you've posted within the last 20 secs - the posts are getting through - but it is at times very slow.

Please do not try tp repost.

If you do get duplicates please use the Report Abuse button - tell us it's a duplicate and we will deal with it.

Thanks

Thats what its for, reporting problems to the forum staff. I use it quite often when I find add-spam posts, normally with a stupid message like 'vikings! with added add-spam' which I hope that admins/mods find amusing (or at least not offensive, with my sense of humour thats all I can ask for sometimes).

You can use that button to report our own posts or to report proper, abusive posts. Hopefully you never have to do that though ;)

Talking about ideas for the site, you should add the following buttons to the reply form for automating the process:
1)Run it from terminal and post us any error messages.
2)Which ubuntu release are you running?
3)Have you installed ubuntu-resticted-extras?
4)Have you tried with another.....(browser, editor, player, etc.)?
and the all time classic
5)Have you tried turning it off and on again? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpmLrz_lSuE)

This all seems very disorganised to me. Canonical is supposed to be an IT company and we're seeing a pretty bad IT failure that has lasted four days. I'm assuming they didn't get next-day delivery on the hardware.
