You could try with nautilus. Navigate to your CDrom, right click on the setup.exe and select wine. If wine is not present, choose custom command and type in wine. You won't see any potential error messages as you would with the command line, but this is another way to try it. Winehq.com (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=768) doesn't say much if the game works or not.

The Sims has been notorious for not running via Wine or Cedega -- generally the installer doesn't work and the game itself doesn't get far.

I do seem to remember someone, somewhere, somehow getting a preinstalled (via Windows) version of The Sims working, but I can't find out how. Makes me want to try it out myself.

There was a version of The Sims created by Transgaming especially for Linux (basically the Windows version and a patched Wine to run it) but it's long since out of print (it came with a version of Mandrake Linux quite a while back).

There is a native redistribution made by Transgamign isn't there? I don't know about expansions... but you could try at any rate.

Or cd to the dir... sometimes Wine isn't so good with relative directories... meaning you may have to be in the games root directory to run it properly and access things... or in this case the installer.

As I said, Transgaming made a "native" (from what I can tell, actually the Windows version running via a custom hack of WineX/Cedega/Wine specifically to run Sims), but it's long out of print, since it was only available as a packin to an old version of Mandrake Linux (a "Gaming Edition", if I recall correctly). Expansions probably won't work, though.

EBay or similar may have copies available occasionally.

Edit: Ebay auction going on right now (http://cgi.ebay.com/Mandrake-Linux-Gaming-Edition-with-Original-Sims_W0QQitemZ7237577282QQcategoryZ41881QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
