View Full Version : HVR 1600 Analog Displaying Static

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my mythbuntu 10.04 install (Mythtv version 0.23.0+fixes24158-0ubuntu2). I tried to set up the analog side of my hvr 1600 as follows:

I made a new IVTV MPEG2 capture card as /dev/video0 (default input is Tuner 1). Then I made a new video source named Analog with my SchedulesDirect info/lineup.

When I try set the input Tuner 1 of /dev/video0 to the video source called Analog and scan for channels, nothing is found. Fetching channels from listing appears to work, as after doing that, I can choose a starting channel from a list of ~80 channels. However, once I exit the backend setup and try to watch tv on the frontend, every channel just shows static like this (http://i.imgur.com/GAvV5.png).

Here's my mythfrontend.log-

Stupid question, but do you have cable plugged into both ports?

I have cable plugged into the 'TV' port on the card. I'm assuming that's the analog half, as the other port is labeled 'ATSC'.

Comcast.

Well, there's your problem.

Your tuner is working fine. Comcast is transitioning to full digital. In most markets, they are no longer transmitting any analog signals. The reason you're seeing static is that there is no analog signal to decode.

I don't think that's the case. I have my cable split into two wires, one going directly into an old tube TV, and one into the hvr 1600. My tube TV can get ~22 channels, which leads me to believe it's not all digital, yet.

But, I'll try setting up the digital half of the card to see if that makes a difference.

There are many versions of the analog tuner used in the various flavors of the 1600. The cx18 driver in 10.04 is a bit old, and may not have detected your precise tuner correctly. dmesg may return a line something like this:

[ 27.037268] cx18-0: tveeprom cannot autodetect tuner!

in which case you have a couple of options. You can run Iglenn's little script, found in message #16 of this thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1498620&highlight=1600+script
It will find which exact tuner you have if the cx18 cannot identify it, so that you may pass the correct tuner parameter to the cx18 module at boot.

Or you can compile and install a recent snapshot of the driver source as found at linuxtv.org as I believe the identification issue has been resolved in currentish cx18s.

For the analog channels 2-99 (whichever ones Comcast still has in your area --most likely 2-22 maximum, and soon to be zippo), you do not actually need to scan with the 1600 and Mythtv. A specific channel may be added to a Video Source manually in the backend setup with the Channel Editor.

Dmesg returns a line similar to the one you mentioned (tuner 1-0061: tuner type not set), so I tried using Iglenn's script to find out exactly which tuner I have. I wasn't able to determine my tuner type from it, because it returns the following line, repeated sequentially:

Tuner type 1: FATAL: Module cx18_alsa is in use.
FATAL: Module cx18 is in use.
Signal strength/AFC : 0%/-187500
I tried removing those modules via rmmod and modprobe -rf, but neither worked, as they were still in use.

Here's part of my dmesg output, starting where I thought it was relevant:

Be sure that you have killed the backend prior to running the script (ubuntu is fussier than some distros about what you're allowed to do with the backend running), and that you're running the script sudo. Or if you rmmod by hand you do it sudo.

Otherwise, there's been a lot of good work on the cx18 driver during all of 2010. Quite astonishing really, in regards to both analog and digital performance. Autodetection for certain analog tuners was added as recently as 7/22. You might do well to download, compile, and install a new set of V4L/DVB drivers from http://linuxtv.org/downloads/

If I'm not mistaken, tvtime is still available via synaptic.

tvtime seems to have a much easier time auto-configuring itself and finding analog channels (although it doesn't work for digital). You may want to install it and try to watch tv with it, which will let you know if you're getting any analog signal through your tuner.

This would normally be reasonable, had the OP's dmesg output not indicated that his cx18 tveeprom could not identify the analog tuner at boot and accordingly could not load with the correct parameter set. The cx18_alsa and cx18 kernel modules have to be unloaded and the cx18 loaded with the correct 'tuner=X' parameter before the analog tuner will pull in anything for any application, including tvtime. The correct 'X' can be determined through automatic detection by a current edition of the cx18 driver, or determined by brute force using something like Iglen's script which tries every 'tuner=X' possibility in sequence (at least from 1-84) Hopefully, one clicks that properly initializes the tuner and gives good analog signal strength. This, then, is set in an 'options.conf' file for modprobe.d or added to a modprobe line in the rc.local, whichever way the OP prefers to set the module to load at boot.

The Mythbuntu problem here is not in the Myth, it's in the 'buntu.

I compiled the latest V4L drivers, but that didn't fix the problem with identifying the tuner.

I still can't seem to unload cx18 and cx18_alsa even with sudo and stopping the backend , as they are always "in use". So, I blacklisted these modules using blacklist.conf, and then tried running the script. Blacklisting them made the test for tuner=1 work, but they couldn't be unloaded for the rest of them, so I was unable to find out my tuner type.

However, I searched around, and found that some people had success using tuner=71 with the hvr-1600, so I tried that one. I was able scan and find 2 channels from that, but they were mis-numbered. On my tube TV channels 2 and 3 are WGBH and HSN, but on MythTV channels 2 and 3 are some Spanish channels. (channels 17 and 19 on my tube TV). The tv guide for channels 2 and 3 on MythTV shows WGBH's and HSN's guides, not the Spanish programs that are actually playing.

edit:Here's dmesg with the latest drivers without 'options cx18 tuner=71' in the options.conf

That incorrect readback of the firmware version could be the problem.

You could very likely be right. The current firmware files for this card are dated from 22 June and are to be found at

http://linuxtv.org/downloads/firmware/

Beyond replacing the older firmware with the newer, the odds are that tuner=71 may be close, but not quite the correct parameter for initializing your particular tuner. It's unfortunate that the current cx18 driver still can't identify yours.

After your firmware is updated, short of identifying what may be burdening your particular cx18_alsa (by using things like lsmod and modinfo cx18_alsa) so that you can't unload the cx18 driver from the CLI or from the script, to avoid the insanity-inducing option of editing your .conf file (or modprobe line in rc.local) through 82 reboots (since you already know the results of '1' and '71') you may need to contact Andy Walls and the cx18 development crew at linuxtv.org for help on getting the driver to work your particular tuner. As described here: http://www.ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Cx18

friends,

i got my hvr-1600 to work by doing the following:

1. download the driver & firmware from: http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Download

direct download address of driver: http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/archiv...-0.10.6.tar.gz

direct download of firmware: http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/firmwa...irmware.tar.gz

2. extract both files by right clicking and selecting "extract"
an error may appear indicating:
"this does not look like a .tar archive."

the workaround to extract both the firmware and driver files is:
a. install gunzip. from terminal enter: sudo apt-get install gunzip

b. after gunzip is installed, open terminal and change directory to where both files are - usually desktop. ex: cd \Desktop.

c. enter in terminal: gunzip filename.tar.gz (replacing file name with the name of driver. enter this command again to do the same for the firmware. ex. sudo gunzip ivtv-firmware.tar.gz & sudo gunzip ivtv-0.10.6.tar.gz

d. change permissions of both files by entering in terminal:
sudo tar xvzf filename.tar - replacing filname with both the driver file and firmware file as described above.

e. once extracted, in terminal change to the directory of the driver file (usually cd \Desktop\ivtv-0.10.6.tar.gz

f. enter sudo build. program will install. let finish and do not interrupt the process.

g. install the firmware. in terminal enter sudo nautilus. be careful, errors doing sudo nautilus can be deadly to your system. (gksu did not work for me here).

h. the root file manager will open. move all files AS INDIVIDUAL FILES (not the folder) from the FIRMWARE directory to \lib\firmware. some firmware files are the same in both the ivtv driver and ivtv firmware folders. just copy all of them as individual files and choose replace when prompted. yes, the ivtv driver will contain some firmware files.

i. close the terminal and nautilus.

j. open the app: STARTUP APPLICATIONS.

K. in startup applications, click ADD.

l. enter "tv tuner card detect" in the DESCRIPTION field.

m. enter the following in the command field:
ivtv-tune -t us-bcast -c 3 -d /dev/video0

you may have another location for your tv tuner card - video1, ect...

n. shut down your computer.

o. add a coaxial splitter from the output of your cable box. one end will connect to your tv, the other end will connect to the ANALOG input of your tv tuner card.

p. turn on the computer. your tv tuner card should now work. try first in movie player and vlc.

q. go to /dev/video0 (or video1, ect), right click on the tv tuner card and select open with movie player.

r. yes, you will only receive the channel that the cable box is currently set to only.

s. tv-viewer in my opinion is the best app for single recording. add the tv-viewer ppa to your software sources. in terminal type:
sudo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/blueyed/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main

t. update software sources by entering in terminal:
sudo apt-get update

u. install tv-viewer from synaptic.

v. IMPORTANT: you will probably have to repeat most of these steps after EVERY kernel update.

enjoy, doogiekd.
