I have an old, rubbish computer, around 800mhz. It doesn't have a large hard drive, and I understand it will be too slow to decode certain videos in realtime.

What I want to do is connect this computer to the TV, and have it play media which is broadcast over the network by other computers.

For example I could play something on my desktop in the room next door, connect to the wireless network, and then play that video on the TV.

Would this setup work, and what software would I be installing on each computer? Could the other computers also be running other OSs?

thanks

Your old computer still has to decode the videos even if they are stored somewhere else if it is connected to the display device (TV/monitor), unless you are using a remote desktop solution (vnc/rdesktop/freenx) but those don't render video well enough, IMHO.

That PC isn't going to be able to do much in the sense of mutlimedia. You can set it up as a music jukebox or a file server but not as a video player.

Ah okay I didn't realise it wouldn't even be fast enough to decode the videos!

Thanks guys, I'll find another use for it :)
