Before...
Could not get past login screen!!!system freezes... Posted two times here with no solution available... even so I am stilll believing in this system... it gives me a warm feeling...strange... am I in love?
Now...
In the end it was a problem connected with the ethernet contoler for my mobo... I have disabled it in BIOS and wverything works now... except my wireless card because it needs ndiswrapper and 64 bit drivers and neither exists....
Installed 32 bit version and 99% works! (all except saitek)
have fun

I hope your wrong about the mobo. I've just had it delivered today but I'm waiting on a AMD A64 3000+ processor to come through the post before I try Ubuntu.

Samsung ML-1210 laser printer
Everything works out of the box and is perfectly supported. All I need now is 64bit Java and Flash...
For reference, neither the soundcard nor printer work under Windows X64.

Except for the fact that there are no 64bit ati drivers ofcourse, everything works great. Shuttle SN85G4 works out of the box with sata_sil raid, temperature sensors, cardreader (both in shuttle and in the printer).
What i really like is that ubuntu installs almost exactly as i always install my debian box.. so i guess im converted :P

Up to now works great, first distro I try where everything works out of the box. :-)
I have not tried yet to plug in my second monitor (same type). Or trying to use the logitech diNovo bluetooth hub to connect to my palm or phone. But the diNovo desktop works better under Linux then under WinBlows XP :-)
I am a Linux-newbie and I think Ubuntu is great

Minor kernel/bios bug with this motherboard resolved causing some DMA timeout issues. Other than that everything worked even wireless on the install.

Disable the Nic in the bios. Install using a spare PCI nic and install that way was my only solution.

Very pleased with the support so far of ubuntu, i`ve given 80% because of the lack of 3d support on my 6800 card and because i can`t get the stupid tv card to work.Havent been able to test the raid from the SIL 3512 nor the onboard Nvidia sata chips as my puter is usually in windows acting as a fileserver for 3 xbox`s around the house (god bless XBMC ;) ).

The 20% isn't Ubuntu's fault, but the fact that both ATI and Intel's driver support is sketchy. ATI will at least come out with a 64 bit driver (hopefully). Intel does not support any kernel beyond 2.4 with the modem chipset I have (HAM)

The ubuntu installation was flawless, detected everything and set it up. The only problem I had was when the installation was finished, and gdm/X couldn't start. Seems like my graphics card is too new for the standard nv driver. After installing the nvidia-glx package it worked though.
Also, I havn't got my Plextor DVD-RW to work. I've searched on the internet and it seems that no one else has. It's not even found by the kernel, so I guess I just have to wait and hope that someone writes a driver :)
One thing I liked was that it detected my SATA drive and installed Ubuntu on it perfectly, while windows XP didn't :-D

The specs here are to find out what is working/not working with 64bit hardware.

Was a bear to install. Fiddled with Debian and Win2K before I figured out that the BIOS defaults oveclocked the setup into unstable territory. I underclocked and installed Ubuntu w/out a hitch. Had disabled on-board LAN and put in a cheap RealTek based card that worked fine. One day when I'm feeling brave I'll crank the settings up to clocked.
DVD burner won't burn CDs or DVDs. No cdrdao for k3b and xcdroast doesn't find any devices when it scans.
Haven't tried the advanced sound stuff like the 6.1 outputs or SPDIF. The kernel loads 1394 drivers but I haven't tried anything.
So, percentage wise? I'd say 70% since I can't burn CDs or DVDs and the on board LAN is not working.

DVD burner won't burn CDs or DVDs. No cdrdao for k3b and xcdroast doesn't find any devices when it scans.
The kernel loads 1394 drivers but I haven't tried anything.
Doh! The primary problem with the DVD burner was that I had unplugged it in order to attach another IDE drive to copy some files over to my new drive. Once I connected it, the system saw it and I can mount it and rip music CDs from it. Haven't tried burning yet.
I just plugged my Sony DV camera and am trying video capture. It seems to be running OK at the moment. It took a bit of twiddling to get the device node created. (MAKEDEV reports the characteristics but doesn't actually create the node. I have to use mknod to do that and then adjust perms.)
OTOH, when I plugged in my dazzle compact flash reader and card, it mounted automagically, recognized it was from a camera and offered to import the images. (even though there were no images on the card at the time. ;) )
So H/W support is starting to look better.

I have ubuntu linux running on the SATA drive, and winXP on the IDE drive. In order to install nvidia raid drivers w/windows for the SATA drive requires all sorts of weaksauce 3rd-party installs which Ubuntu managed to install right away. WinXP also can't detect the Marvell GiGE onboard ethernet without installing the driver, and the driver is totally hooped and sometimes needs re-installing for no reason. Ubuntu managed to not only automatically configure gigabit ethernet, but I get insane d/l speeds now (I'm connected via Fiber Optics in Canada).
My shuttle SN95G5 XPC seems to run fine under linux. no heat issues, all the firewire/usb ports were found no prob, and even the NFORCE3 chipset w/onboard sound is working fine. I am totally amazed

Alps Touchpad: flakey, it's supposed to use the synaptics driver, but that sig 11's X on load. based on the output of 'xev' it generates button 1 event on left click, button 3 on right click, and the scroll rocker generates a button 2 on down click, nothing on up click(or I would just remap it to work as a scroll)
If anyone has gotten one of these working let me know, it's not just ubuntu that fails with this one.
Screen: works
4-in-1 reader: untested: unrecognized in any linux distro and I don't own any compatable cards(could borrow one from work though).
Anyway, that's the hardware. show stoppers are the wireless and the touchpad. I don't want wires when working late in bed, and I don't like not having the scroll buttons working - makes some shortcuts annoying.
I do like that ACPI was setup on install, that alone earns points over my debian64 install, pressing the power button does things right now. Lid close probably does too and the battery is indicated in the corner right now.
Anyway...
Enjoy!

Very odd. Both Hoary and Warty do not install. Very Frustrating! In Hoary, for example, I select all defaults - let Hoary partition the drive itself, and it appears to install fine. Upon reboot I get thrown into a default GRUB mini-shell, as if Grub can't read the .list file. If I boot with Knoppix 3.7 and drop into mc, I can see that everything exists on the drive and is readable though. Hoary just won't boot. In the Install phase I have to select pci=noacpi for it to work at all. Help!!!

Before...
I've first installed Ubuntu in 32bits, and all was fine, but I hadn't 64bits support :-/
Now...
I haven't 3D acceleration on my graphic card, I fail in installing ATI drivers on my Warthy.
ACPI fail in stopping the machine (the famous message ...power_call)
The rest works fine (even the DVD writer and the gamepad).
I don't know if I go back to 32bits, or I wait for the Hoary release (which should correct all my problems).

This has come up several times on the Debian AMD64 mailing list. One solution (with a couple variations) includes:
dpkg --get-selections | grep -w install | \
xargs -n 20 apt-get install --reinstall -y
(duplicates package versions)
dpkg --get-selections | grep -w install | awk '{print $1}' | xargs -n 10 \
-- apt-get -y --reinstall install
(reinstalls current versions.)
These commands reinstall on the same system and can be used with some care to go back to a previous version (once your /etc/apt/sources.list is modified.) By replacing one of the pipes with a file, you could duplicate one installation on another.
I haven't tried either of these so I can't vouch for their suitability to your needs, but perhaps if you google for get-selections and dpkg you might get more comments.

My biggest problem is the lack of support for ATi Rage Mobility 3D Acceleration. Other than that, everything else pretty much works fine. Audio works fine, but because of Warty's rather irresponsible audio server setup (both ALSA and OSS active at the same time...seriously, who thought that was a good idea?) many sound applications are rather flaky.

I have fought through various attempts at installing both Warty and Hoary, all failures. The closest I've come to getting it to work was with Warty, after trying nearly all the combiniations of BIOS options possible...
Warty: installs, some errors concerning powernow-k8, and X11 cannot load, linux command line works ok, except for the errors from powernow
Hoary: daily from 2005 02 16: fails to install after determining that the kernel package is corrupt, but when installing in expert mode, the full media check is good.
Hoary: array-3: installs but the GRUB hangs and powering down is the only way out.
Warty & Hoary live-cd's work ok, but I wouldn't call them "elegant" certainly a long way to go to catch up to Knoppix.
I have filed bug 5723 on the Ubuntu buggzilla and the support has been good, until recently when I seem to have been abandoned....
Conclusion:
I can't get Warty or Hoary to install properly, no one seems to be able to offer a useful way forward, I am only an expert programmer not a Linux expert, and don't have the knowledge to debug it alone.
I'm shopping for a 64bit Linux that will install, but that works better on Multimedia applications than Fedora Core 3. I liked Ubuntu's attitude about support, until recently, and the documentation available seemed good. If only the OS would work...

they give a help thing using mandrake as an example for fodora core 3 ? or not for a 64 system, so where can you find the self help books that are going to compliment an os , I don't mind at all using a help section, self help is the best help, yet if i don't how to find the help section I can't help myself, forms are ok for some things but not with an entire os, people switching from windows need lots of intutive help, self help should not be scattered acoss the web, the linux poeple who take care of the information should set aside time to interface window users into the os platforms,
a big *** flash sign --windows user's click here--- then weaving them into linux and os platforms
perfect example downloading iso images than checking 5dsums forget to mention window users need to download another program to check them. another is trying to download a driver for my video card the book says follow the instructions on the web site, the web site refers to whats good for your os and download to suit your os, it seems the web sites are from the perspective of programers which is good if your a programer not for from the average computer user, all this time spending in code to make a better linux for hand full of programers, you will never dent the windows market or run on the same level of os, prime example a web page thats that loads to "slow" click "next" windows users are click and go. and at the same time linux users say play with it, how do i play with it? I can see from my point that only a few will catch on the rest will fork over $700. for longhorn rather than waiting for help that is way too ""slow""
I not saying linux is less than microsuck, but what I'm saying is linux should be at the frount of the drive not sitting in the back in darkness. I can just imagine putting linux on my dads computer lol
yea i got him a digital camera five or some years ago, he just started using it before christmass. that my point if you can create a help section for someone like my dad linux will have its day in the front of the drive.

Everything works out of the box, except of course the nVidia 6800GT (doesn't work with the nv driver, so the restricted modules have to be installed). And my Plextor PX-716SA does not work unless I download the 2.6.10 kernel and modify the /usr/src/linux/include/linux/libata.h to ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI. I hope the 2.6.11 (which will fix teh SATA Optical drive problem) will be included within Hoary. Or at the very least there will be a backported patch to 2.6.10. As of now, the nvidia-kernel-source won't compile cleanly with the 2.6.11 source, so I'm kind of in a bad position until something can be done.

About two months ago , I got sick of my father ringing asking me how to get all this "stuff" (viruses/spyware stuffed registry etc) off his win98 machine was slow and didn't work at times and eventually didn't boot to the os.
Took him an old P 3 500 , on which I installed Linux (SuSE 9.1).

I finally got ubuntu to install (using failsafe defaults and then turning options on one by one in the bios) and now my only problem is that when rebooting the system stops and tells me that fsck failed because my super block is corrupt or my filesystems are not proper ext2 filesystem... control d to continue and the system boots the rest of the way and works fine (except the nic card which is slower than xmas). the nic works fine with internet but it does not run at GB speed on local network... more like 10 base... told me 14 hours to copy 3 gigs... So i'm gonna turn that thing off and add a pci nic card... at least for now...

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Chaintech VNF3-250 (all hard drives on IDE, not using onboard audio/SATA)
60gb Seagate Baracuda ATA IV hard drive
Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 128mb
M-Audio Revolution 7.1 soundcard
Samsung ML-1210 laser printer
Everything works out of the box and is perfectly supported. All I need now is 64bit Java and Flash...
For reference, neither the soundcard nor printer work under Windows X64.
I also have the VNF3-250 and I try installing Ubuntu using a SATA and a ATA HDD but neither would work with Linux. Windows XP installs properly.... I don't know what else to do and why no Linux can properly install using this board. My question is: Did you do any special config (BIOS) to your mobo to be able to install Linux using the VNF3-250. I'll be really greatful if you can help.

Everything works great (except maybe the modem). The only things that didn't work with a default installation were the extra buttons on my trackball (easily fixed using the evdev driver) and hardware acceleration for the graphics card (not _easily_ fixed). I'm not sure if the extra crap on the keyboard works or not, either, the only extra button I ever use is the volume up/down and that works fine.

Using SMP seems to be very unstable and crashes with in an hour. I have tried all the SMP kernals with no luck. With one core being used it stays up for 2 to 4 hours. Ubuntu was great on my old PC. I see other user with problems with dual core PC with no fix.
I'm not sure which part is being rejected by Ubuntu but it may be the mobo.

!! AVOID THIS BOARD LIKE MONKEY PLAGUE !!
- Doesn't work with latest version of AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ CPU even though it's listed as compatible.
- Not possible to upgrade BIOS to support new CPU's without first flashing it using an OLD version ATHLON 64. This is BAD! I took the unit back to our hardware vendor and they had to try THREE different CPU's in the board to find one it would boot with. The CPU that worked was an ATHLON 64 3500, just like the one I had tried initially, but from a DIFFERENT REVISION. Apparently AMD changed the processor stepping(?) between revisions and the board's BIOS couldn't handle it.
-BIOS Upgrade that fixes CPU Problem breaks USB functionality
-Faulty hardware DSDT table in all BIOS versions breaks ACPI functionality
See: http://quaggaspace.org/a8nvm/
-Hangs Ubuntu (both the installer and the installed O/S) during each startup for up to 10 minutes, then resumes.
-Onboard video controller crashes the X-Server due to driver problem. It appears that a working driver is not available.
See: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=130190&highlight=A8N-VM
-No support for onboard networking controller.
-No support for onboard Audio controller.
See: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=57791&highlight=a8n-vm+csm
-Numerous other issues.
Ubuntu fought this board like a champ, but facing the possibility days (weeks) of hacking this thing and possibly never coming up with a fully working solution, I decided to throw in the towel.
So this MoBo is now on its way back to our hardware vendor, and I'll be building my system with more compatible hardware. In the future I'll be researching new hardware *WAY* more carefully before selecting it for a new system!

Is 1 GB RAM common in Europe and U.S. these days? Here in Karachi people having 1 GB are normally either hard core gamers or power users.
