Many Laptops have microphone problems, internal mic and external mics. Either they are noisy or silent. Many threads about this topic some recommend using ALSA, PULSEAUDIO, PASU or other tactics.
Alternative idea:
Use a bluetooth headset, its works on my campaq laptop using USB dongle and Nokia BH 154 headset, which works with the nokia phone as well.
