I've seen a lot of information lately on the problems with trying to install Debian packages into Ubuntu--how they were never meant to be compatible and can cause dependency problems and such.
Why not use a different extension for Ubuntu packages, something like .ubp? This wouldn't actually prevent anyone from installing alien packages if they really felt like it, but it might ensure that people know the difference.
