Contemplating Installation, 1 Question

Okay, so I have Windows XP Pro SP2 currently installed. Everytime I reboot, I have the options for "Windows XP Professional" or "Ubuntu". The Ubuntu OS doesn't exist on this computer, but it registers as Ubuntu 10.04. So, I now have the Ubuntu 10.10 install disk on standby, and want to fix the Side-By-Side install so it does work. But I'm wondering, what happens if I install side by side and it fails? Will I lose my current OS and have to completely reinstall?

Install side by side from Ubuntu live cd usually works fine, but as with all OS installs, anything can go wrong, so back up your XP before starting.
