I reformatted my computer last night and put Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. I made and used the Ubuntu 10.04 live cd last night. Install was uneventful. Now I can't use update manager. I get this error:

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

I'm a newby and am used to Windows so some terminology is confusing to me.

I did:

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install -f

I swear it didn't work the first time I tried it but is now. Go fig.

For others, if the method above did not work then you might want try the one posted at:

It has fixed it for me, & pretty sure it can help some others fixing their as well.
