My hard disk and CD/DVD IDE drives are slow.
I tried to check if DMA was enabled and got this for one of my hd

mo@darkstar:~$ sudo hdparm -d /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

the same for DVD drive.

mo@darkstar:~$ sudo hdparm -d /dev/sr0

/dev/sr0:
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I run ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 64 Athlon 3200+ (I had the same problems and never solved them with previous versions of ubuntu)

I know Sheldon from BigBang Theory could help me on this, but I doubt he is monitoring this forum :). If anyone else can help her/his suggestions are welcomed. Thank you in advance:

Mauro
