I went to the Ubuntu Software Centre and did a search for xchat and the output was:

XChat IRC and XChat Gnome IRC Chat

Would someone tell me the difference and what is the best option for a Noob like myself please.

Xchat-Gnome is a frontend to the popular X-Chat IRC client.
I think you would probably be happier with the original....that seems to be the consnesus among users. The Gnome version is always slightly behind in version. If your accustomed to IRC then X-chat original would be the way to go.
