I know there are a few apps out there, but can you actually rip and copy DVD's that you own and make copies?
If so, which one is best, and how do you do it?

Ogmrip(in synaptic), acidrip(in synaptic), handbrake. you can download the portable version of handbrake http://portablelinuxapps.org/

after download , right click->properties then check "execute as a program" (or something like this). then double click the file.

I don't use any ripping software. just copy-paste the required file.

If you are living somewhere where it is legal to copy DVDs you own... you can use k9copy: http://k9copy.sourceforge.net/

As to how to use: this article is written in Welsh but google translate does a fair (not perfect) job of translating
